16 July 2026 Sustainable Development Goals
The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development concluded its work in New York with the adoption of a ministerial declaration. Countries once again reaffirmed their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and called for intensified efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda.
“Less than five years remain until 2030, and the task before us is not just to speed up the pace of work. We must work in a new way, collaboratively and decisively,” said Lok Bahadur Thapa, Chair of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
According to him, achieving the SDGs can no longer be viewed within the framework of a single goal, sector, or organization. This requires comprehensive policy, stronger partnerships, and effective international cooperation.
More than four thousand participants
The forum took place from July 7 to 15 under the auspices of ECOSOC. More than four thousand representatives from governments, businesses, civil society, youth and scientific circles, UN institutions, and other organizations participated in its daily activities.
Participants presented innovative solutions, exchanged experiences, and discussed strengthening partnerships to accelerate progress in achieving the SDGs.
Particular attention was given to five goals: “Clean Water and Sanitation,” “Affordable and Clean Energy,” “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure,” “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” and “Partnerships for the Goals.” Participants emphasized that comprehensive measures in these areas could accelerate the achievement of the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
International cooperation yields results
“Even in the current period of disagreements, multilateral cooperation continues to yield results,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
As examples, he mentioned the Pact for the Future, the Seville Commitment, the Doha Political Declaration, the Agreement on the High Seas, and the Antigua and Barbuda Programme of Action for Small Island Developing States.
The UN chief also noted progress in data collection and analysis, which enables countries to more accurately determine their development priorities. According to him, the SDG Summit taking place next year will provide an important opportunity to strengthen the momentum achieved and to mobilize political will, financing, and international solidarity.
Forum participants emphasized: The Sustainable Development Goals are already yielding results, but now the global community urgently needs to scale up effective solutions.
