London, July 12 /Xinhua/ — A container ship sustained damage as a result of an incident on Saturday evening off the coast of Oman, which led to a fire on board. This was stated in a release by the UK Maritime Trade Operations Coordination Centre (UKMTO).
UKMTO received a report of an incident that occurred approximately 16.7 km east of Oman on Saturday at 22:40 GMT.
“The military reported that the container ship suffered damage in the stern section, which led to a fire on board,” the statement says. Authorities are investigating the incident.
The UKMTO did not disclose the name of the vessel.
Separately, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy was attacked by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one crew member going missing.
The vessel was unable to continue moving due to a fire on board and significant damage to the engine room, CENTCOM added.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the waters around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important waterways, connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. –0–
