Tokyo, July 11 /Xinhua/ — On Friday evening, a large number of Japanese citizens gathered here in front of the National Assembly building to protest against a series of dangerous political measures and bills recently proposed by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government.

According to the organizers, about 27 thousand people personally participated in the protest, and about 110 thousand joined online.

The protesters lined up in columns stretching for several kilometers along the sidewalks around the parliament building, chanting slogans such as “Stop Takaiti’s reckless actions” and “Japan must forever renounce the use of force.”

They also collectively read aloud Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution as a protest against a number of measures that many believe increase the risk of war and are being implemented despite widespread public discontent.

Noriko Kanamori, one of the participants in the demonstration, told the Xinhua correspondent that the recent initiatives of Sanae Takaichi’s administration are equivalent to preparing for war. She criticized the prime minister for dismissing public concerns by stating that “Japan is not in a state of war,” calling such a response outrageous.

Another protester stated that the current government makes decisions unilaterally, without considering public opinion.

“Everything they do gradually pushes Japan toward war,” he told reporters.
