During the summer internship, students of the Department of Architectural and Urban Heritage at SPbGASU get acquainted with real restoration objects.
Thus, together with the associate professor of the department By Ekaterina Litova The students visited the scaffolding of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The ascent to the site allowed them to see it from an unusual angle, examine architectural elements in detail, and learn about the specifics of the restoration work. Future architects-restorers learned about the complexities and specifics of working with one of the most significant architectural monuments of Petersburg.
Another group of students from the department visited the newly identified cultural heritage site – the Lutheran Church of Vuoksela on the Karelian Isthmus.
During the field trip, the future restoration architects learned about the history of the monument, studied its architectural features, defects, and losses, and carried out photographic documentation.
Familiarizing oneself with the restoration process in an active facility helps students gain a deeper understanding of the specifics of the work: how important it is to combine a scientific approach, engineering precision, and the skill to work with historical heritage.
Such visits to sites are an integral part of training specialists in the reconstruction and restoration of architectural and urban planning heritage. They help foster a careful attitude towards historical and architectural monuments, an understanding of the responsibility borne by specialists in the field of historical heritage preservation, and a better awareness of the value of their conservation for future generations.
