Madrid, July 10 /Xinhua/ — 12 people died and one more suffered severe burns as a result of a major forest fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in Los Gallardos in Almería province in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. This was reported by the Andalusia Emergency Service 112.
The first reports of the fire came around 17:00 local time /15:00 GMT/ on Thursday. Under the influence of high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, the forest fire quickly spread to the neighboring municipality of Bedar. Regional authorities activated the 1st level of the Andalusian emergency action plan for forest fires /INFOCA Plan/, evacuated residents of Bedar and several nearby settlements, and temporarily closed sections of the A-7 highway and the N-340A road.
According to the official statement, some of the victims were found inside vehicles engulfed in flames.
Firefighting efforts continued throughout the night; ground crews, firefighting planes, and helicopters were deployed to contain the flames.
Judicial authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and the identities of the victims, while emergency services remain on high alert as firefighting efforts continue. –0–
