Ankara, July 8 /Xinhua/ — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Wednesday that Greenland “is not for sale,” urging all allies to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of her country.

“We hope that everyone, including all allies, will respect the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination. We are a sovereign state, and we need everyone to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty,” M. Frederiksen told journalists before the start of the main session of the NATO summit in Ankara.

In response to the question of whether Denmark is prepared to defend Greenland by military means against any adversary, the prime minister directly referred to Article 5 of the NATO Charter, which enshrines the principle of collective defense among member states.

“We are ready to defend every inch of NATO territory, including our own,” she stated.

US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States should take control of Greenland from Denmark. “Greenland should be under the control of the United States, not Denmark,” he said in Ankara.
