Recently, at a brackish water seafood farming base located on the territory of the 16th regiment of the 1st division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in the very heart of the Taklamakan Desert, researchers harvested large oysters cultivated there. It is hard to imagine that live oysters could be successfully grown on these saline lands near the desert.
After more than five months of research and experiments, experts from the Ningbo City Aid Xinjiang Headquarters, Ningbo University, and the Eastern Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Center of Zhejiang – Aksu (Kucha) have successfully developed a technology for cultivating oysters in desert conditions.
Aquaculture on saline desert lands far from the sea has become not only a true ecological miracle, allowing residents of Xinjiang to buy fresh seafood in their region, but also another outcome of the assistance program for Xinjiang. Moreover, this success has opened up new opportunities for the development of specialized industries on saline lands.
Previously, oysters supplied to the Xinjiang market were mainly transported from afar using refrigerated transport, which significantly reduced their freshness. Thanks to a successful experiment, local residents can now enjoy fresh oysters grown in the desert without leaving the region. The new technology also opens up additional opportunities to increase the income of the local population.
