For Dias Muratovich Isakanov, a student at the Kazakh workshop of Lu Ban at Tianjin Vocational University, one of the main discoveries was the understanding that mastering a technical specialty cannot be limited to textbooks alone. Previously, he memorized theoretical principles well during classes, but when faced with an actual malfunction, he often did not know where to start.

In the EPIP model classes (Engineering, Practice, Innovation and Project), students undergo practical training based on real projects. Working in groups, they, in particular, perform diagnostics of faults in car battery packs using new energy sources. While developing the technology for detecting thermal runaway in battery packs, students repeatedly faced setbacks during equipment adjustment and had to check various parameters over and over again. During preparations for the WorldSkills competition among vocational schools, instructors from China and Kazakhstan worked together with students, helping them conduct numerous practical tests and improve technical solutions. This experience allowed students to significantly enhance their practical skills and ability to work in a team.

The EPIP model is based on the principle of “learning through practice and applying the acquired knowledge during the learning process,” helping to transform theoretical knowledge into professional skills. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the “Lu Ban Workshop” project’s expansion to the international level. Along with the workshops, this professional education model has also arrived in Central Asia, providing local youth with new opportunities to acquire professional skills and develop craftsmanship.
