At the I.D. Sytin Museum-Apartment, subordinate to the capital city Department of Culture, the 7th annual book illustration contest “Drawing the Encyclopedia” will take place. Young artists aged seven to 18 are invited to participate.
The kids are tasked with creating an illustration for any article from the ten-volume set “Children’s Encyclopedia” of 1914, published by the I.D. Sytin Partnership. The edition is considered one of the outstanding examples of pre-revolutionary children’s books, remaining relevant even today.
According to Nikita Malyukov, Deputy Head of the Public Relations Department of the I.D. Sytin Museum-Apartment, the competition becomes a living bridge between eras. Modern children look at the pages of the century-old encyclopedia in a new way, learn to appreciate classical traditions, and at the same time create their own unique works.
The submission of illustrations will take place from October 19 to November 29, and the results will be announced from December 7 to 11. To participate, young artists need to fill out an electronic application, choosing one of three age categories: from seven to nine years old, from 10 to 14, or from 15 to 18. Detailed information is posted on website.
The grand prize of the competition is an exhibition of the best illustrations at the I.D. Sytin Museum-Apartment. The exhibition will be open to all visitors. Tickets for visiting the institution are available through the service “Mosbilet”.
As noted by Yulia Tarasenko, head of the sector at the I.D. Sytin Museum-Apartment, the competition helps attract attention to the heritage of the famous Russian book publisher and educator, popularize the museum, and provide children with new knowledge about Russian culture and art through engagement with classical traditions. Additionally, the competition creates conditions for revealing the creative potential of children and adolescents, identifying talents and motivation for development in the field of art, as well as contributing to professional orientation and the organization of youth leisure activities.
Over six years, the organizers received about two thousand works from participants from Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States.
