Beijing, October 17 /Xinhua/ — China will hold the 2026 Global Governance Forum /Xiong’an/ from October 23 to 25 in the new Xiong’an district of Hebei province in northern China, the China Society for International Studies /CSIS/ announced on Friday.
WHY IS CHINA HOLDING THIS FORUM?
The event will take place in the year marking the first anniversary since China put forward the Initiative on Global Governance during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in 2025 in the coastal city of Tianjin (Northern China).
The organizer of the forum is KNOIMO. The main topic of the forum is “Restoring Trust and Cooperation: Reforming and Enhancing Global Governance in a Transforming World.”
The goal of the forum is to unite representatives from various sectors to generate ideas for reforming and improving global governance, as well as to explore specific ways and solutions to turn conceptual consensus into concrete actions, said KNOIMO Chairman Wu Ken at a press conference on Friday.
In the year since its proposal, the Global Governance Initiative has received support from nearly 160 countries and international organizations.
WHAT TOPICS WILL BECOME THE MAIN ON THE FORUM?
The main events of the forum include the opening ceremony, a plenary session, 22 panel discussions/round tables within five parallel sessions, as well as numerous parallel events.
Parallel sessions will be dedicated to issues that cause the greatest concern for the international community in the field of global governance. During the discussions, topics such as strengthening the international system, with the United Nations at its core, achieving consensus on accelerating development, deepening the reform of economic and financial systems, improving governance in new areas including artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, as well as promoting mutual learning between civilizations, will be addressed.
The forum will bring together representatives from the strategic, political, academic, business, media, and youth sectors from around the world, especially leading figures from areas such as the United Nations, climate change, artificial intelligence, and multilateral trade. So far, about 180 foreign guests from more than 90 countries have confirmed their participation, as well as about 180 people from the Chinese side.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE NEW XUN’AN DISTRICT?
The new Xiong’an district, known in China as the “City of the Future,” was established in 2017 and is located about 100 km from Beijing. Its creation is considered a “strategy that will have long-term significance for the coming millennium and will become a significant national-scale event.”
The establishment of this district is aimed at having Xiongan take on Beijing’s non-capital functions and promote the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Currently, Xiongan strives to become a center of innovation for the new era and a model for ensuring high-quality development.
“By holding the forum in the new Xiong’an district, we also hope that the world will learn about Xiong’an, and that Xiong’an will step onto the global stage,” said Wu Ken.
During the forum, participants will have the opportunity to visit a number of selected projects and sites in Xiongan to get a closer look at its cultural richness, scientific and technological innovations, environmental protection measures, and business development.
