In Russia, Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of October. This year the date falls on October 18, and it is a good occasion to say what we usually do not say out loud.

For our country, this holiday has not yet become customary – it appeared relatively recently. But its emergence seems to have restored justice: now the family has two parental holidays instead of one. This supports family values and serves as a reminder that both parents raise the child.

As with Mother’s Day, Father’s Day had its own history long before it was officially recognized. Some regions began celebrating it on their own. In Yakutia, the holiday honoring men raising children appeared as early as 1999, and in Vologda Oblast – in the early 2000s. Fathers were honored in other regions as well, but each on their own day.

In 2019, the Council of Fathers under the Children’s Rights Commissioner initiated making this holiday nationwide. In July 2021, the Ministry of Labor proposed to celebrate the holiday on the third Sunday of October, after which President Vladimir Putin signed the corresponding decree.

The State University of Management also contributed to the development of fatherhood culture. Experts from SUM, together with the Moscow Council of Fathers and the Union of Fathers, developed a Concept for the Formation of Fatherhood Culture, which was presented at the Fathers’ Forum at the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation at the end of 2021. In October 2022, on the eve of Father’s Day, the university held a round table titled “Fatherly Contribution to the Future Workforce of the Country.” It presented data from VCIOM: 71% of Russians say fathers participated in their upbringing. In February 2023, with the support of SUM, a conference of the Council of Fathers under the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in Moscow was held, dedicated to the development of fathers’ councils. University students were awarded there for projects on forming a culture of fatherhood.

The State University of Management congratulates all fathers on Father’s Day: teachers and staff, students and alumni, fathers of our pupils. A father’s love is often quiet. It is in how you wait late in the evening and pretend you simply can’t sleep. In a strong shoulder to lean on at any age. In the short “you can,” which then helps all your life. We do not always manage to tell you the most important things, so today we will say: thank you. For patience and care, for wise advice that at first we do not listen to, but then repeat as our own. For the personal example, which is stronger than any words.

May your children always remember that you were the first hero in their lives. May warmth and understanding await you at home, and may you have enough time for your favorite activities and family. Wishing you health, strength, and as many happy moments as possible with your loved ones.

Happy holiday, dear dads!
