Restoration work in the Old Gostiny Dvor will begin in early February 2027. The last time this architectural monument was restored was in 1995.

During a recent inspection, specialists identified wear and tear on the building. If the necessary work is not carried out soon, the federally significant cultural heritage site may be lost.

“The Old Gostiny Dvor in Moscow is one of the oldest commercial and architectural complexes in the capital. The planned works will allow preserving this unique cultural heritage site for many years, restore its most important structural elements and appearance, as well as ensure the safety of its visitors in the future,” said a representative of the capital.

Department of Cultural Heritage.

The restoration will be carried out in stages. First, they will repair the glass roof over the atrium. Here, waterproofing must be done, the frame structures reinforced, and the deteriorated glazing replaced with modern glass.

Then restorers will clean the facades, repair the plinth and its parts, as well as the brickwork. The exterior walls will be treated with protective compounds, plastered, and painted in a historical color. Special attention will be paid to the architectural white stone and stucco decoration. Specialists will also reorder the granite slabs on the floor and steps.

The Old Gostiny Dvor was built at the end of the 18th century in the classical style, designed by the Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi. Subsequently, the building was refined by Moscow architects Semyon Karin and Ivan Selekhov under the guidance of Matvey Kazakov. It acquired its modern appearance by 1830 with the involvement of architect Osip Bove, who was engaged in restoring Gostiny Dvor after the fire of 1812. The building of Moscow’s Gostiny Dvor served as a model for many Gostiny Dvors in other Russian cities.

The tenants of Gostiny Dvor were informed about the upcoming restoration plans in advance, in accordance with the procedures established by law. After the completion of all work, the Old Gostiny Dvor will once again be a center for major city and international events.
