At the “Izmailovo” gallery, as part of the celebration of National Unity Day, there will be a free screening of the film by Iosif Kheifits “The Big Family.” The film received the award for “Best Acting Ensemble” at the 8th Cannes Film Festival in 1955.

The film tells the story of the large Zhurbin family — hereditary shipyard workers. Three generations live together: grandfather Matvey, his son Ilya Matveyevich, Ilya’s four sons (Viktor, Anton, Konstantin, and Alexey), and the youngest daughter Antonina.

The second son, Anton, arrives from Leningrad to implement a new shipbuilding method. The elder son, Viktor, a craftsman specializing in making models of future ships, is trying to design a universal machine.

The youngest son Alexey has the most difficult character. He separated from the family, intending to get married, but his girlfriend Katya became infatuated with the club manager, who abandons her upon learning about the pregnancy. Alexey finds the strength to forgive her and take her back along with the child.

At the same moment, Lida, Viktor’s wife, leaves the family, feeling like a stranger among those whose lives are tied to shipbuilding. Due to the reorganization of production, many family members have to change their professions. Ilya Zhurbin tries to master the basics of algebra so as not to fall behind and quarrels with his old friend, Master Basmanov, who believes their time has passed.
