On the portal “Discover Moscow” a new one has appeared walking route, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of theater and film actor, People’s Artist of the USSR Yevgeny Yevstigneev, one of the founders of the Sovremennik theater, which is under the jurisdiction of the capital Department of Culture. Citizens are invited to visit places associated with his life and work. During the walk, you can see the buildings of legendary theaters, learn about their history, and recall the performances in which Yevgeny Evstigneev acted.
“The new route of the ‘Discover Moscow’ project offers the opportunity to explore the creative path of Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, one of the founders of the Sovremennik Theatre, an actor whose roles have become part of the cultural code of several generations. The tour goes through iconic places, including the MXAT School-Studio, Triumphal Square, the Moscow Drama Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin, and the artists’ house of the Bolshoi Theatre. For user convenience, all points of the route are marked on an interactive map, and additional information about each location is available via an embedded link,” the Moscow press service said.
The route starts at MXAT Studio Schools In 1954, Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, already an established actor at the Vladimir Regional Drama Theater named after A.V. Lunacharsky (now the Vladimir Academic Drama Theater), was enrolled directly into the penultimate year. There were only 17 students in the group led by Pavel Massalsky. Among them were Oleg Basilashvili, Tatyana Doronina, and Mikhail Kozakov. Yevgeny Yevstigneyev was several years older than his classmates, but thanks to his talent and professionalism, he was able to integrate organically into the team.
In 1956, an innovative Studio of Young Actors was established in the training theater of the Moscow Art Theatre School-Studio. Its founders included Galina Volchek, Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, Oleg Tabakov, Igor Kvasha, Lilia Tolmacheva, and Viktor Sergachyov. The leader, ideological inspirer, and artistic director of the group was Oleg Yefremov.
The future Sovremennik Theatre appeared on April 15, 1956. On that day, the graduates presented their first independent work on the stage of the Moscow Art Theatre School-Studio — the play “Forever Alive” based on the play by Viktor Rozov.
Yevgeny Evstigneev was a leading actor of the Sovremennik Theatre from 1956 to 1971. At first, the troupe wandered across various venues. The company officially received its name, “Sovremennik,” in the spring of 1958. By the late 1960s, it became an independent artistic entity with a strong troupe and an independent civic stance.
The next point of the tour will be Triumphal Square. This was the location of the first building of the ‘Sovremennik’ theater. The troupe received it in February 1961 thanks to the support of the Minister of Culture, Yekaterina Furtseva. In 1974, the square was being reconstructed, and the dilapidated building was demolished.
Another point of the route — Moscow Drama Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin In the 1960s, the famous play “The Naked King” based on the play by Yevgeny Schwartz was performed here. Tickets were impossible to get, the audience literally stormed the box offices. To control them, law enforcement officers were on duty near the theater building on Tverskoy Boulevard. Yevgeny Yevstigneyev played the role of the Bridegroom King in the play. This role brought him all-Union fame.
The route continues near the building The Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov in Kamergersky Lane. Yevgeny Yevstigneyev joined here following Oleg Yefremov in 1971. In 1974, for his performance as Pyotr Khromov in the play “Steelworkers,” the actor was awarded the USSR State Prize. He performed in both contemporary and classical productions. Among his notable roles are Count Shabelsky in “Ivanov” (1976), Doctor Chebutykin in “Three Sisters” (1976), and Alexander Serebryakov in “Uncle Vanya” (1985).
The walk will end at homes of the Bolshoi Theatre workers on Nikitsky Boulevard, which was built in 1971. Besides Yevgeny Yevstigneyev, Innokenty Smoktunovsky and Oleg Yefremov also lived here at different times. They all met for the first time on the same film set while working on the movie “Beware of the Car.”
Yevgeny Evstigneev passed away on March 4, 1992. His characters have forever remained in the memories of viewers. He played Professor Preobrazhensky in “Heart of a Dog,” Professor Pleischner in “Seventeen Moments of Spring,” comrade Dynin in “Welcome, or No Trespassing,” as well as Alexey Beglov in “Winter Evening in Gagra” and Paramon Korzukhin in the film “The Chase.”
