The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra (MSSO), subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture, presented creative plans for the first half of the 2026/2027 season. The program will be centered around a cycle dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s birth, large-scale symphonic and operatic programs, as well as projects combining music, theater, and the spoken word. Alongside the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, stars of the world stage will perform: Denis Matsuev, Simon Trpceski, Vadim Repin, Elena Stikhina, Ivan Gyangazov, and other well-known performers.
For the composer’s 120th anniversary: six programs featuring Shostakovich’s music
One of the key events is the MCSO’s participation in the DSCH cycle, dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s birth. The first concert with the orchestra took place on September 25 — the composer’s birthday.
As part of the series, all of Shostakovich’s concerts featuring violinists will be played in six programs until December 6. Andrey Baranov and Christophe Barati, cellist Alexandra Knyazeva and Boris Berezovsky accompanied by the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. The composer’s works will be presented in a dialogue with the music of his predecessors, contemporaries, and followers: Mieczysław Weinberg, Nikolai Myaskovsky, Paul Hindemith, Gustav Mahler, and others.
Opera poster: Mozart, Strauss, Rossini, Verdi, Tchaikovsky
An important part of the program is the orchestra’s participation in opera productions. It is the only symphony ensemble whose repertoire includes three operas by Richard Wagner: “The Flying Dutchman,” “Tannhäuser,” and “Lohengrin.” On December 19, the orchestra will perform in the “Zaryadye” hall “Lohengrin” — the most romantic opera by the composer. The main roles will be performed by stars of the world stage Ivan Gyngazov and Elena Stikhina. The opera program also includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Strauss, Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and other composers.
Symphonic music and the spoken word
Literary and musical programs and concert performances are another important area of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra’s activities. Here, symphonic music acts as a full participant in the dramatic action, forming a synthesis with the artistic word. In such projects, alongside the orchestra, Evgeny Mironov, Darya Moroz, Marina Alexandrova, and other well-known theater and film actors will take the stage. Thus, on November 8 Sergey Bezrukov will act as a narrator in a production about the mysterious disappearance of the composer, in which the audience will get to know various instruments and participate in solving the mystery. The director is Georgy Isaakyan.
Touring activities
The orchestra will embark on a touring concert in Yekaterinburg, Kaluga, Chelyabinsk, Ozersk, and Svetlogorsk. MCSO concerts are also planned in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and other regions of the country.
