During the excursion
On October 7, students from the Department of Architectural Environment Design (specialization “Design”) of SPbGASU, together with the acting head of the department Sergey Lutchenko and senior lecturer by Evgeny Bruchas at the invitation of the director of the Central Museum of Railway Transport Vladimir Mitelenko visited the Museum of Bridges.
The tour was conducted not only for educational purposes: the museum management is interested in cooperating with the department to create a new exhibition space within it.
The Bridge Museum is a branch of the oldest in Russia Central Museum of Railway Transport of Russia on Sadovaya Street. Its exhibition features the world’s only authentic models of 18th-century bridges from its own collection and the funds of the State Hermitage. The oldest model in the collection dates back to the late 18th century and was made according to the design of the Swiss engineer Aldon in 1762. There are also operational scale models of 19th-century bridges on display, which later served as the basis for the construction of city, highway, and railway crossings. Creating such models sometimes took more time than the actual subsequent construction based on them.
In October 2019, the museum received its own building at house number 2 on Muchny Lane, where a unique exhibition, unparalleled in the world, was established. Every year, the museum’s collection is supplemented with new exhibits from the 20th and 21st centuries, among which are models of the Crimean Bridge over the Kerch Strait and the new St. Petersburg crossing – the Great Smolensky Bridge over the Neva.
Due to the expansion of the exhibition in 2024, the governor of St. Petersburg decided to allocate the museum an additional space of 1,180 square meters adjacent to the existing building. It will house an exhibition under the motto “From Past to Future,” aimed at reflecting the achievements of modern Russian bridge construction.
In 2027, the first cohort of the department specializing in “Design” will complete their studies, and the project for the new exhibition’s design is offered to the graduates as a topic for their diploma project.
