Specialists urban infrastructure complex have begun the rehabilitation of the Upper and Small Kachalovskie Ponds and an old riverbed in the southwest of the capital. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and Improvement Pyotr Biryukov.

“The Upper and Small Kachalovskie ponds are part of a cascade of four water bodies in the floodplain of the Bitza River and are among the popular recreation spots for residents of Northern Butovo. The oxbow near the Small pond is a section of the former channel of the Bitza River that over time became separated from the main flow and turned into a separate water body. During the survey, it was found that the ponds are in unsatisfactory condition: large volumes of silt deposits have accumulated at the bottom, and there is shoreline erosion. Therefore, a decision was made to carry out their comprehensive rehabilitation,” noted Petr Biryukov.

Water bodies with a total area of more than 1.5 hectares will be cleared of silt, their shoreline strips will be tidied up and reinforced, engineering structures will be repaired, and bioplato zones will be created.

More than eight thousand cubic meters of silt deposits are planned to be extracted from the bottom, which will help reduce the intensity of water bloom in the area. After that, the pond beds will be formed. They will be backfilled with sand and crushed stone, and the shoreline strips with a total length of more than one and a half kilometers will be reinforced.

For reinforcing part of the bank of the Upper Kachalovsky Pond, the shotcrete method is used: old concrete structures are cleaned, a waterproofing mixture is applied, and a reinforcing mesh is fixed, which is then covered with cement under pressure. On another section of the shoreline, as well as along the entire length of the Small Kachalovsky Pond, gabions will be installed.

To reinforce the banks of the old riverbed, a pile wall made of larch timber is used, and for the slope section — granite crushed stone.

At the completion of the work, nine bio-plateau zones with a total area of over 670 square meters will be arranged in different parts of the reservoirs, where aquatic plants will be planted during the warm season.

City utilities specialists regularly inspect Moscow’s water bodies, and if problems are identified, a decision is made to rehabilitate them. The list of water bodies is compiled every year taking into account the wishes of Muscovites.
