An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.
In Moscow, many charitable projects are being developed to support the older generation. They are helped with acquiring high-tech rehabilitation equipment, expensive medicines and medical devices, and are delivered food packages and hot meals. In addition, an important part of the work of charitable foundations is emotional support. Elderly people are given communication: they are involved in creative activities, organized engaging leisure, and helped to find furry companions from shelters. Anyone can support these good initiatives by donating funds through the charitable service on the mos.ru portal and purchasing goods created by the wards of non-profit organizations (NGOs) in special inclusive workshops.
Support the residents of nursing homes
History of the fund “Old Age as a Joy” It began in 2006 with a trip by student Elizaveta Oleskina to a nursing home in the village of Yamm (Pskov region). She was there with friends who were volunteers, bringing gifts and interacting with elderly people. In 2011, a foundation was established based on this movement. Today, it cooperates with more than 14,000 volunteers, and assistance is provided to over 100,000 elderly people and people with disabilities across Russia.
The fund purchases food, medicine, and heating equipment, acquires rehabilitation aids, helps pay for expensive surgeries, sends caregivers to sponsored nursing homes and to homes, and supports relatives. In addition, the fund has created a project “Pen Pal Grandchildren”. He invites people from anywhere in the country to write letters and postcards to elderly people living in nursing homes.
Help like a neighbor
Fund “Good Neighbors” was established in 2020 thanks to the initiative of caring residents of the Izmaylovo district. The organization supports lonely elderly people and large families who find themselves in difficult life situations. At the foundation, they can quickly receive social and psychological assistance.
For the clients, food and essential items are purchased, and they are helped to organize leisure activities. Over the years of the foundation’s work, its activities have significantly expanded. Public organizations and responsive people from other districts of the capital have joined it.
With attention to the needs of veterans
Charitable foundation “Memory of Generations” supports veterans of the Great Patriotic War and combat veterans. For those under care, high-tech prostheses, anti-decubitus systems, hearing aids, rehabilitation and hygiene aids are purchased. And they also pay for nursing services.
One example of the foundation’s support is the story of Valentina Vasilievna, who survived the war in Stalingrad (Volgograd). Her father, who worked as a cook at the “Shipyard” factory, went to the front and died in 1943 near Smolensk. Together with her teacher, Valentina helped the wounded in a hospital set up at the school. “Maybe that’s why I decided to become a teacher,” she recalls. After graduating from the pedagogical college, Valentina Vasilievna returned to her native school and devoted many years to teaching. Now, as her hearing has begun to fail, the “Memory of Generations” foundation helped her acquire a hearing aid.
Get a pet and become happier
NGOs create special conditions for urban residents of the “silver” age who are looking for a pet. The foundation “Assistance for Homeless Mixed-Breed Animals” develops a program “Old friend”. It was created to support adult dogs from shelters and allows them to find a new home. A person of any age can take such a pet. However, if a dog is taken by a person over 55 years old, the foundation, according to the agreement, takes on part of the maintenance costs: it purchases and delivers food, pays for veterinary services, and helps with transportation to and from the clinic.
The “Old Friend” program helps pets regain the joy of life, and their owners become happier. For example, Sean, a dog who is now about 13 years old, was once a home pet, but then ended up on the street and was taken to a municipal shelter. There, he was diagnosed with a hernia: thanks to the fund’s money, he underwent surgery, but the dog’s left paw remained numb. Orthoses, made at the fund’s expense, quickly became unusable, and amputation awaited the animal. In May of this year, Sean found a rescuer, Irina. She is 68 years old and has repeatedly nursed animals from shelters back to health. In her care, Sean flourished: thanks to massages, daily long walks, and proper nutrition, the dog, who was being prepared for surgery, not only walks again — he runs. Now the dog lives with Irina together with the dog Trezorka.
Appreciate the work of master enthusiasts
Autonomous non-profit organization “Grandma’s Ball” helps elderly Muscovites with disabilities. NGOs organize creative workshops where older city residents socialize and learn new skills: they learn to knit items and toys, sculpt from clay, and engage in painting. The classes take place in premises, which the city provided to the NGO for gratuitous use.
Thanks to the project, elderly city residents with disabilities have gained the opportunity to earn additional income. Items created by craftsmen with health conditions are featured on the first social marketplace in Russia “Moscow is a kind city”. They can be purchased by anyone interested.
