The annual youth forum “Heritage” has started in Moscow. It will bring together students from leading universities and colleges: aspiring architects, restorers, sociologists, historians, economists, urbanists, and representatives of related specialties. Participants can expect an intensive competition segment, as well as educational and excursion programs: lectures by leading experts, tours of restoration workshops, design bureaus, and architectural monuments.

“This year, participants are to develop and present projects for the restoration and contemporary use of a unique federal cultural heritage site — the Mikhaylovskoye estate, whose history is closely linked to great state figures and noble families of Russia. More than 300 students from Moscow universities will take part in the forum’s competition program, assisted by professional restorers and architects. Our goal is to give young specialists the opportunity to become familiar with the specifics of working with historical and cultural monuments, as well as to come up with ways to give them new life and integrate them into the modern urban environment,” said the head of the city’s Department of Cultural Heritage.

Alexey Emelyanov.

The forum traditionally began with a student competition. At the opening, participants learned which cultural heritage site they would be working on and met the project curators. Experienced mentors will support the participants: restorers, architects, and specialists from the capital Department of Cultural Heritage (Moscow Heritage Department) and representatives of Moscow universities.

For the next two months, participants will work on projects for the restoration and modern use of the Mikhailovskoye estate. The estate’s history includes several stages. By the late 1780s, Lieutenant General Mikhail Krechetnikov had created a majestic estate complex here. In 1816, the estate was purchased by Sergey Sheremetev, under whom the estate became a model farm with a museum, where forestry, horticulture, animal husbandry, and beekeeping were practiced. In 1918, Mikhailovskoye was nationalized and turned into an ethnographic museum. Since 1966, sanatoriums of various types operated here. Since 2017, the estate has been abandoned. In recent years, two chapels have been restored and emergency repair work carried out on the main house.

Based on the results of the draw, 12 interdisciplinary teams were formed. Each team included representatives from 14 fields. These are restorers, architects, historians, economists, lawyers, urbanists, designers, managers, landscape designers, tourism specialists, as well as PR and IT specialists.

Among the universities participating in the forum are the Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy), the National Research Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, the Ilya Glazunov Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and others.

In November at the cultural center “Youth of Moscow The “Rodina” will undergo the forum’s business program, as well as discussions by leading experts on heritage preservation and the protection of the forum’s competition projects. Student works will be presented on November 27. Evaluation will be conducted by a competition commission that includes practicing architects, restorers, urbanists, Moscow historians, representatives of Mosgornasledie, as well as rectors and professors from participating universities. The best solutions may be applied in the restoration of the Mikhaylovskoye estate.

The forum will conclude with a large festival held on November 28 at the “Depo. Three Stations” venue on Novoryazanskaya Street (building 23, structure 1). Participants and guests can look forward to workshops, quizzes, a job fair, as well as a book salon, lectures, film screenings about Moscow, and performances by local historians. Anyone interested will have the opportunity to present their own project on the preservation of the capital’s cultural heritage. A separate program has been prepared for children.

The “Heritage” Forum is an educational project of the capital city Department of Cultural Heritage, created jointly with Moscow universities. Its main idea is not only the restoration of architectural monuments but also their integration into the modern life of cities. The event has been held since 2018, and over 130,000 people have participated in it during this time.

Photographic materials and information about Moscow’s cultural heritage are collected in the new “Cultural Heritage” section in the city media bank “Mosfoto”.
