In Moscow, the list of contenders for victory in the literary competition for the Korney Chukovsky Prize was announced. The full list of nominees can be found at website. The competition is organized with the support of the capital’s Department of Culture.

“This year, more than 400 applications were submitted from 51 cities. The shortlist included 45 works, whose authors will continue to compete for the title of best children’s prose writer, poet, and translator. The names of all winners will be announced before the end of the year at a formal award ceremony. The prize fund for each nomination amounts to one million rubles. Laureates will receive cash rewards, and the leading books will be added to the collections of the capital’s libraries,” said the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the Moscow Department of Culture.

Aleksey Fursin.

According to the rules, writers and translators whose works were published from January 1, 2025, to June 7, 2026, were eligible to apply for the award this year. The application deadline was July 6. Contestants submitted 402 original works from 51 cities and 44 subjects of the Russian Federation. The long list of laureates was announced on August 25, including 85 works of various genres. From these, a short list was formed.

The jury included experts from capital city libraries, laureates and winners of literary contests and awards, children’s authors and translators, including Oleg Roy, Yulia Vesova, Yulia Kuznetsova, Maya Lazarevskaya, Maria Sukhotina, Andrey Manukhin, and others. Now they have to determine the winners in the following categories: “Best prose work for children under seven years old,” “Best prose work for children from eight to twelve years old,” “Best poetry collection for children under seven years old,” “Best poetry collection for children from eight to twelve years old,” “Best translation into Russian of a work for children under seven years old,” and “Best translation into Russian of a work for children from eight to twelve years old.”

The leader of the seventh nomination — “Best Work for Children According to Readers” — will be chosen by Muscovites. In the project “Active Citizen” a special vote will be posted. Users will be able to share their opinions on the best works of children’s prose, poetry collections, and translated books. The winner of the Readers’ Choice Award will be the nominee who receives the highest number of votes.

About the contest

The Korney Chukovsky Award was established in 2020. Its goal is to support contemporary authors and translators of children’s books, as well as to promote reading.

Among the applicants are authors aged 18 to 70. Most often, they choose prose categories, which account for about half of the total number of applications. Each year, the contest’s geography expands: over six seasons, authors from 75 regions of the country have participated — from Kaliningrad and Norilsk to Vladivostok and Sochi. They submitted 4,694 applications, and 35 writers and translators became laureates.

All participating books can be viewed in the seasonal catalogs of the Korney Chukovsky Prize at contest website, and with the winning books — in Moscow libraries. Last year, the award recognized seven works.
