The Moscow Marathon took place on September 26 and 27. More than 45 thousand people participated. Athletes ran distances of 10 and 42.2 kilometers, as well as competed in a relay race. Separate competitions were organized for the youngest athletes.
This year, an updated route was prepared for the participants: it started on Kosygin Street and ended at Luzhniki. The path ran along the embankments of the Moscow River, the Garden and Boulevard rings, Tverskaya Street, and along the walls of the Kremlin.
“The Moscow Marathon holds an important place in the capital’s sports calendar due to its mass participation and is one of the main running events in the country. Every year it attracts tens of thousands of participants and spectators from around the world, contributing to the popularization of sports, enhancing Moscow’s tourism appeal, and strengthening the city’s image as one of the most dynamically developing and hospitable cities in the world. The events of the Moscow Marathon are not just competitions held over two days at various distances. It is a genuine running festival, uniting like-minded people, professional athletes and amateurs, and advocates of a healthy lifestyle. The Moscow Marathon gives participants a unique opportunity to see the capital from an unusual angle, run through the city’s iconic historical places, and feel the rhythm and energy of the metropolis,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Regional Security and Information Policy
The competitive program was divided into two days. On September 26, a 10-kilometer race took place, as well as children’s competitions at 400 and 800 meters for participants aged four to 13.
The next day, September 27, a race over the classic marathon distance of 42.2 kilometers took place, along with corporate and student relays. For the first time this season, there was a separate amateur category with prize places. It included those who started the race not from the elite athletes’ cluster but were ready to compete for a result.
The results were recorded by timing systems, video recording, and judges. On the 42.2-kilometer distance, the top ten finishers were awarded, as well as the top three leaders in each age category among men and women. In the 10-kilometer race, the top three runners in the men’s and women’s categories became prize winners. Throughout the distance, the athletes were supported by spectators.
The event was held with the support of Moscow City Department of Sports and corresponded to the goals of the state programs of the Russian Federation “Development of Physical Culture and Sports” and “Sport of Russia”. One of them is increasing the share of citizens who regularly engage in physical culture and sports to 70 percent by 2030. The capital makes a decisive contribution to achieving this goal. Special attention is paid to having infrastructure close to home, supporting families with children, as well as integrating participants and veterans of the special military operation and their family members into the sports community.
