In the capital, under the major renovation program, houses where outstanding pilots who held the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union” lived are being refurbished. Their achievements are forever inscribed in the history of our country. Among the buildings where famous aviators lived are houses on Leninsky Prospekt, 7th Parkovaya Street, and Leningradsky Prospekt.
The house of the first woman — Hero of the Soviet Union
In 2026, specialists are renovating the facade of the monumental building 44 on Leningradsky Prospekt. Valentina Grizodubova lived here; she was a colonel, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, and the first woman honored with the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
A six-story multi-family residential building was constructed in 1937 according to a custom design in the post-constructivism style with elements of neoclassicism. The architects are Boris Leibo and Arnold Suris. The building is known as the residence for the leaders and teachers of the Zhukovsky Military Air Academy. It combines simple rectangular shapes and large glass surfaces with expressive decorative elements. The main building is distinguished by a balustrade and is richly decorated. Alternating loggias are unified by porticos with a simplified Corinthian order. Above the entrances are arched niches with classical porticos, whose windows have rectangular, arched, and round shapes. The building is encircled by decorative belts and a crowning cornice.
To renovate the facade, specialists from the Moscow Capital Repair Fund developed an individual project, selected modern technologies, and high-quality domestic materials.
Specialists have already cleared, washed, and treated the exposed surfaces with an antifungal agent. They are carefully restoring all decorative elements, such as columns, porticos, and capitals. After repairing the plaster layer, the building is given back its historic shades of “grey silk,” “yellow ash,” and “red ant.” In addition, they are refurbishing the loggias and balconies, entrances, plinth, and paving, as well as renewing the downspouts.
The house of a hero who completed 168 combat sorties
Major repairs are also underway in the building 90 on Leninsky Prospekt. It features a memorial plaque dedicated to the pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union, Guards Colonel Ivan Zlydenny, who completed 168 combat sorties during the Great Patriotic War.
The eight-story apartment building was constructed in 1958 based on a standard series design. The building has a U-shaped form. On the main facade, the ground floor is highlighted with stained glass glazing, a pattern is applied to the cornice surfaces of the main and end facades, and the cornice of the courtyard facades is decorated with dentils.
The Moscow Capital Repair Fund created a separate project for the work, taking into account all the features of the building. Materials and technologies were selected based on its specifics. Specialists cleaned and washed the walls, restored all the joints, and replenished the lost elements of the brickwork and ceramic blocks. The damp areas were treated with an anti-fungal composition.
At the final stage, the street facades will be treated with hydrophobic coating, and the courtyard facades will be painted. Upon completion of the main work, the entrances and the facing of the building’s plinth will be repaired, and the downspouts will be renewed. On the roof, damaged rafters, battens, and roofing materials will be replaced. Wooden elements will be treated with fire- and bio-protective compounds to reduce the risk of fire. The attic space will be insulated with mineral wool boards. Additionally, a new electrical network will be installed, and the main pipelines for central heating, cold, and hot water supply will be replaced.
House of the Major General of Aviation
Major overhaul work is underway in building 16, block 2 on 7th Parkovaya Street, where retired aviation Major General, Hero of the Soviet Union, and participant of the Great Patriotic War Alexander Polunin lived.
The 17-story multi-apartment residential building was constructed in 1982 based on a modified standard series design. The building has a simple shape.
Specialists washed the exposed facade surfaces, cleaned the interpanel joints, laid insulation in them, and sealed them, while treating damp areas with an antiseptic solution. The building was painted in shades of “brown-red” and “signal white.” Currently, specialists are plastering the basement, and replacing the roof covering. In the final stage, balconies and entrances will be repaired.
