The velvet season has arrived at VDNKh — a special autumn time when various annual and perennial plants are still in bloom. The exhibition’s alleys are decorated with dense carpets of begonias, dusty sage, airy verbena, fragrant alyssum, and other flowers. You can admire the colors of autumn and have a vibrant photo session on the Central Alley, in the formal flowerbeds by the “Friendship of Peoples” fountain, near Pavilion No. 1 “Central”, in the Michurin Garden, the southern and northern rose gardens, as well as in other spots around VDNKh.
You can read about walking routes and choose a suitable place in the special section on the official website exhibition website.
Breathe in the scent of alyssum and admire the begonias
In September, it is pleasant to watch the blooming of lush perennial plants at VDNH. On the Central Alley, near the “Friendship of Peoples” fountain and Pavilion No. 1 “Central,” you can see large inflorescences of echinacea and rudbeckia in fiery and golden shades, tall spikes of knotweed, and graceful flower stalks of hosta with lavender or white flowers. Their beauty is emphasized by ornamental grasses — the accent of the exhibition’s September landscape. Among them are Chinese miscanthus, molinia, calamagrostis, and meadow grass.
You can admire miscanthus and calamagrostis by visiting the Michurinsky Garden located behind the “Cosmos” pavilion. And right behind the main entrance arch are the backstage flower beds called “Soul of Russia.” Sedum spectabile is currently blooming there.
Along the northern loop of the VDNH ring road, near the “Friendship of Peoples” fountain, as well as close to pavilion No. 62 (International Ballet Center), panicle phloxes have been planted. In September, you can still see white, delicate pink, bright fuchsia, and blue inflorescences of these fragrant perennials.
Places along the main walking routes are decorated with annual plants: bright begonias, ageratum, Bonarian verbena, and alyssum. Picturesque carpets of large begonias of the “big” variety and ornamental grasses are spread out across the landscape park and the quiet square near the “Moskvarium”.
Arrange a photo shoot surrounded by roses and lush hydrangeas
Walking through the autumn exhibition, it is worth visiting the northern and southern rose gardens, located on both sides of the Central Alley. Here you can see roses that are currently experiencing their second wave of blooming. They harmoniously coexist with plants such as powdery sage, sea alyssum, and echinacea. In addition, the rose beds are decorated with hooded barley, yarrow, and scabiosa.
You can also enjoy the scent of roses near the House of Culture (pavilion No. 84). Among the varieties presented here are “Mona Lisa,” “Tornado,” “Bonica-82,” “Angela,” “Kevia,” “Mary Ann,” and “Hans Genvein.” Here you can also see the tea-hybrid rose variety “Chippendale” with large double flowers and a rich aroma with hints of peach and mango.
Another autumn decoration of VDNKh is elegant hydrangeas. These sprawling shrubs are located near Pavilion No. 5 “Physics” and along the northern loop of the ring road. There grows the panicle hydrangea of the “Vanilla Fraise” variety with lush pink flower clusters. You can also admire the hydrangea in the Uzbek park and near the Marriage Palace. And in front of Pavilion No. 29 “Floriculture and Landscaping” bushes of panicle hydrangea “Grandiflora” with huge heads of light pink, lime, and white flowers have been planted.
