Electric buses have started operating on route M34 in two districts of Moscow. It connects Belorussky railway station and the Filyovsky Park metro station. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.
“Under Sergey Sobyanin’s directive, we continue to develop the network of surface urban transport. Modern and environmentally friendly Mosgortrans vehicles are being deployed on the route. They are equipped with everything necessary for comfortable trips. On weekdays, 18 vehicles will operate on the electric bus route, which connects as many as 10 metro stations,” added Maxim Liksutov.
The M34 route passes by parks, recreational areas, medical and educational institutions in the districts of Fili-Davydkovo, Filevsky Park, Presnensky, and Tverskoy.
Comfortable and eco-friendly
Electric buses have been supplied to the capital since 2018. Today, they operate in all districts of Moscow. The modern vehicles are characterized by smooth rides, absence of noise, and vibrations.
Innovative transport does not affect the city’s ecology. According to data from MosEcoMonitoring of the capital Department of Environmental Management and Protection, only in 2025 was it possible to avoid the emission of about 380 tons of pollutants and almost 110 thousand tons of carbon dioxide. And from 2018 to 2025, these figures amounted to 1.3 thousand tons and 300 thousand tons respectively.
On weekdays, passengers make on average more than 1.2 million trips on electric buses. Since 2018, the total number of trips has exceeded 1.1 billion.
Electric transport provides a high level of service. USB ports for charging gadgets and media screens with up-to-date information about the nearest stops and possible transfers are installed in the cabin. The climate control system maintains an optimal temperature inside the vehicle. When the doors open or close, an air curtain is activated, which helps to maintain a comfortable temperature in the cabin.
For passengers with limited mobility, electric buses are equipped with a folding ramp and driver call buttons. If necessary, the driver will assist in boarding and exiting the cabin. Bicycles, strollers, or large luggage can be placed on the holding area. Additionally, there are buttons inside the cabin for selective door opening.
For passenger safety, the vehicle is equipped with video cameras both outside and inside. Digital validators are located near the doors, allowing payment for the ride by any convenient method.
Since 2022, the capital has been supplied with upgraded equipment vehicles. Such electric buses feature adaptive interior lighting, which changes from a cold shade to a warm one at 14:00. The front route indicator, enlarged by 18 percent, allows the number to be seen from afar. The electric heater inside the cabin does not affect the environment and maintains an optimal temperature. The range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers, while the vehicle’s weight has remained the same.
Today, electric buses operate at 13 facilities of Mosgortrans. Moscow was the first in Russia to begin building modern electric bus depots. In 2022, the first electric bus depot in Russia and the largest in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra”, was opened. Environmentally friendly vehicles started running on routes in the Novomoskovsky and Troitsky administrative districts. A year later, the “Mitino” depot was built in the northwest of Moscow, and electric buses began running on routes in 20 districts of the capital and two nearby cities in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative electric bus depot — “Saltykovka” — started operating. It serves routes in the eastern part of the city.
New generation electric buses
In 2025, a new generation of KamAZ-52222 electric buses were put into service. In these vehicles, the interior layout was redesigned, the storage area was increased by 15 percent, spaces for hand luggage were arranged, and the door design was changed. The climate control system became even more efficient, and light strips indicating opening and closing were added to the doors. The exterior design of the vehicles became more aligned with current trends in global industrial design.
Innovative vehicles are designed taking into account the operational experience of earlier models and passenger feedback. Since their launch, next-generation electric buses have traveled over 10 million kilometers on routes and have proven themselves well in operation. The unique equipment is serviced at 10 Mosgortrans facilities.
Moscow continues to develop surface transportation. With its help, city residents reach rail backbone stations, important social, cultural, and sports facilities. New deliveries of equipment and the development of charging infrastructure will allow the creation of even more electric bus routes. Moscow’s order for the production of new equipment supports employment in the regions and stimulates the development of domestic industry.
