The UN needs an “ambitious leader” firmly committed to the principles of the Organization’s Charter and international law, said European Council President António Costa at the UN General Assembly’s general political debates. According to him, the current UN Secretary-General António Guterres “vividly demonstrates” these qualities.

Guterres will leave his post at the end of this year. “His consistent efforts to uphold the UN Charter, protect human rights, reform the global financial architecture, and ensure sustainable development, as well as his decisive actions in the face of climate change, have become a true beacon for us, illuminating our path and guiding our joint efforts,” said Costa.
He noted that the European Union calls for a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council in order to increase its effectiveness and inclusiveness.
“The European Union will continue to promote the strengthening of the United Nations – politically and financially, as well as through concrete actions,” said the representative of the European Union.

“Russia must put an end to the dangerous escalation”
Koshta noted that the consequences of the “aggressive war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine” are global in nature.
“Russia’s actions against Ukraine threaten the safety of civilians even beyond Ukraine’s borders; it is absolutely unacceptable that over the past 12 months Russia has repeatedly jeopardized the security of several European Union member states,” he said.
“Russia must put an end to this dangerous escalation, and the international community is obligated to do everything possible and use all the tools at its disposal to stop this war and create conditions for negotiations on a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,” added the President of the European Council.
