In April of this year, the residents of Hungary voted for a “democratic renewal,” said the president of the country, András Baksa, at the general political debates of the UN General Assembly.
“They expected more than just a change of government. They are awaiting changes in social life, the rule of law, a state that serves the people rather than controls them, courts making decisions without pressure, a press that criticizes those in power, and the use of public funds for the common good,” Baká emphasized.
He stated the need to bring to justice those who are guilty of corruption and abuse of power.
“But there must be no revenge. Justice cannot become a political weapon. A democratic state cannot correct past mistakes by repeating them under new leaders,” the president said.
Ukraine: Diplomacy must put an end to the bloodshed
Baka condemned Russia’s “full-scale aggressive war,” which violates the UN Charter and international law norms. “We reaffirm Ukraine’s right to self-defense, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, as well as the right of its people to independently determine their own future,” he stated.
He expressed hope that diplomacy would put an end to the bloodshed.
“If the seizure of territories by force becomes a commonly accepted way of resolving disputes, every small country will have reason to fear for its future. Therefore, the principles of the UN Charter are important for all of us,” Baká said.
“We need the UN”
According to the president, the UN today faces a “crisis of trust.”
“Too often she remains inactive when powerful states and their allies break the rules. No country should be above the law. It is unacceptable to apply one set of rules to your allies and another to everyone else,” said the Hungarian leader.
“However, the solution is not to turn away from the UN. We need it, and we need it to work effectively,” he added.
An organization must be able to act, treat all its members fairly, and apply uniform principles to everyone.
“Hungary is ready to contribute. We will defend human rights, support peacekeeping activities, and cooperate with countries around the world to protect people and ensure the success of diplomacy,” Baka said.
