In the municipal theaters subordinate to the capital Department of Culture, ticket sales have opened for the winter season performances. Audiences can look forward to New Year’s productions for the whole family — from classic fairy tales in a new interpretation to musical and interactive shows.
Gothic “The Nutcracker” and New Year’s Concert
The Taganka Theatre will warm up the audience with a New Year’s concert the vocal and instrumental ensemble “Kama”. The festive atmosphere there will be created by lights, dancing, musical hits, and performances by artists.
In addition, a production will be shown here “The Nutcracker”. The creators of the play combined the atmosphere of early 20th century Russia with Tim Burton’s gothic aesthetics and a modern interpretation of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s music.
The Nutcracker and Marie will have to face a more cunning adversary than the mouse army and answer the question of whether it is possible to reach the light by destroying evil. The creators of the production suggest looking at the familiar fairy-tale world in a new way, dispelling the myth that dolls only come to life at midnight. The director of the play is Georgy Smirnov.
Maxim and Katya’s Journey to the Land of Dreams
The “Grandpa Durov’s Corner” Theater invites you to the New Year’s performance “Flight to the Land of Dreams”. According to the plot, Maxim and his sister Katya go to a festive fair to get a New Year’s tree and unexpectedly find themselves in a land of dreams. There, the characters meet its inhabitants, as well as kind and cheerful animals: a hippopotamus, camels, a sea lion, an elephant, goats, ferrets, foxes, ponies, a donkey, and other animals.
Best productions
Starting December 17, the “Vedogon-Theater” will present for the first time the New Year’s program “Best of the Best.” Instead of the traditional premiere, the audience will be treated to favorite productions from past years: “Morozko” and “Farewell, Ded Moroz… or The Polar Night Attacks!”. The performances are designed for children aged six and older. And for children from three years old, they will once again show an interactive fairy tale “Miracles, nothing but!”. In addition, the theater will prepare a new program for the holiday concert for adults.
“New Year’s celebration is a time of traditions, such as the Christmas tree, gifts, Ded Moroz, Olivier salad, ‘The Irony of Fate’ on TV… We also decided to offer the audience a theatrical tradition — time-tested, beloved New Year’s performances. It’s like taking a favorite book of fairy tales off the shelf and reading it anew. For some, it will be a reason to revisit a beloved story, others will see what they missed in past years, and for many, I think, it can be an occasion to prolong the holiday and watch all the fairy tales at once. And we offer the audience a choice,” noted the artistic director of the Vedogon Theatre, Honored Artist of Russia Pavel Kurochkin.
New Year traditions and interactive fairy tales
The Moscow State Academic Theater “Russian Song” will present the show for the 11th time “Babkin’s Tales. How Father Frost and the Water Spirit Celebrated New Year”. Every season, director Maxim Lakhno creates a new story about kindness, friendship, and miracles, and for many Moscow families, attending «Babkiny Skazki» has already become a New Year’s tradition.
In addition, for several years the small stage of the theater has been hosting performances of the “Little Tales” cycle. This season, director Maksim Lakhno will present the premiere of the play “Little Tales — 5”. The New Year’s story with Ded Moroz and Snegurochka will be told by the soloists of the ‘Rossiyane’ ensemble. Young viewers, together with their parents, will be able to take part in the interactive part of the performance and become heroes of the fairy tale.
The New Year’s repertoire of the theater will be complemented by a musical performance “The Night Before Christmas” based on the novella by Nikolai Gogol. It was created by director Nina Chusova. This production marked the beginning of the main stage’s history in the theater, as well as many years of creative collaboration and friendship with its director.
“Snegurochka” in a modern sound
The Moscow Children’s Variety Theatre invites children and adults to a musical performance “Snegurochka”. Here, familiar folk motifs will sound anew, and the traditional Russian color will help create the atmosphere of a winter fairy tale.
Snowdrops in December and the adventures of Father Frost
A play will be shown at the Teresa Durova Theater “The Twelve Months”. It is based on the famous dramatic fairy tale by the Soviet writer Samuil Marshak, written in 1942–1943 specifically for the Moscow Art Academic Theatre. According to the plot, a capricious and whimsical princess demands to be brought snowdrops on a frosty December day.
Playwright Artem Abramov retained the main storyline of the work but supplemented the familiar story with new characters, comedic situations, and surprises that happen only during the New Year. The fairy-tale atmosphere will be enhanced by ice skating, Christmas pictures, humor, and mischief. The director of the production is Teresa Durova.
For the little ones, the theater has prepared a New Year’s performance “How Santa Claus Almost Slept Through New Year’s” with interactive gaming elements in the foyer and the hall. In the story, Ded Moroz almost misses the celebration, but two brothers from the Morozilkin family manage to wake him up.
Together with the little viewers, the characters help the New Year’s wizard get ready for the journey, turning what happens into a game and an adventure. It depends on the characters and the viewers whether Father Frost will arrive in time where he is awaited and bring a holiday to the residents of the small snowy town.
“Lukomorye” with new decorations and costumes
The Moscow Musical Theater “Helikon-Opera” is resuming the children’s musical performance “New Year in Lukomorye”. During the Christmas holidays, the production will be performed for the first time on the stage of the “Stravinsky” hall in a new version: the audience will see updated scenery, costumes, and stage solutions. The cast will also be joined by a young generation of performers.
The plot of the production is based on the play by director Alexander Koruchekov.
“For many years we have been working with Alexander with great pleasure because his plays are written with humor and an understanding of what children need, and we want our play ‘New Year in Lukomorye’ to appeal to different audiences — six-year-olds, twelve-year-olds, and maybe even sixteen-year-old viewers,” noted the director of the play, Ilya Ilyin.
Interactive stories about New Year’s miracles
The Moscow Children’s Puppet Theater has prepared several interactive New Year’s performances.
Thus, in the performance “How Snowflake Met the New Year” Young viewers, together with the characters, learn about the holiday traditions, its main character, and why it is important to obey parents. The characters will interact with the audience and engage the children in the events. At the end of the show, each child will receive a New Year’s surprise and have a meeting with Ded Moroz.
Musical interactive fairy tale “How Santa Claus Saved the Geese” created based on the song “Two Merry Geese.” The main characters — geese Erofey and Dorofey — meet Voronenok, after which their winter adventures begin.
One more production — “The Mouse King’s Tricks”. This is an interactive performance based on Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” A story familiar to many from childhood, combined with the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, will remind you of the Christmas miracle. A decorated Christmas tree, gifts in colorful boxes, the aroma of festive pies and resin, candles in the windows, and stars in the sky create an atmosphere where the most incredible and magical things are possible.
“Morozko” with skomorokhs-rapper-hip-hop artists
A family-friendly play will be performed at the Theater on Malaya Ordynka “Morozko”. One of the favorite plots of Russian folklore is presented in a new interpretation — with songs, dances, skomorokhs-rapper-hip-hop artists, magical snowflakes, and a talking dog.
