As part of the federal project “Development of the Federal Network” within the national project “Infrastructure for Life,” comprehensive work continues on the development and modernization of federal highways and artificial structures. Since the beginning of the year, more than 2,100 km of federal highways have been restored to regulatory condition by the Federal Road Agency and the state company “Avtodor.” At the sites, repair work, including major repairs, as well as measures for the comprehensive maintenance of the road network, have been completed. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“The maturity of the road industry is determined not only by the scale of construction but also by the ability to systematically manage the existing infrastructure, ensuring its reliable operation and timely renewal. This approach allows for maximizing the service life of the road network and effectively utilizing its resources in the interests of people and the country’s economy as a whole. These tasks are being consistently addressed through the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life.’ This year, more than 5.8 thousand kilometers of repaired federal roads will be put into operation. To date, more than 2.1 thousand kilometers have been brought up to standard,” said Marat Khusnullin.
The condition of artificial structures (such as bridges, overpasses, and culverts) largely determines the reliability and stability of the entire road network’s operation. Their systematic renewal remains one of the priority focus areas for Rosavtodor.
“In the face of increasing pressure on the transport system, it is especially important to work proactively and timely update its key elements. This fully applies to artificial structures—some of the most complex objects in road infrastructure. Their systematic renewal is critically important for the sustainable operation of the country’s transport complex, ensuring the necessary connectivity of all its elements. In this regard, more than 14 thousand linear meters of engineering structures are planned to be put into operation on federal highways in 2026,” said Minister of Transport Andrey Nikitin.
The development of the federal road network is aimed, among other things, at improving the transport accessibility of the country’s territories. To this end, the most significant routes are being updated, with unpaved gaps being consistently eliminated.
“When planning road works, we consider not only technical indicators but also the role a particular road plays in the lives of people and entire regions. We pay special attention to eliminating dirt gaps, as this directly affects year-round transport accessibility of settlements and territorial connectivity. Among the priorities is also the renovation of socially significant road facilities leading to key settlements and major transport hubs. To implement these and other tasks, 397 billion rubles have been allocated for capital repairs, maintenance, and servicing of roads and bridges under Rosavtodor’s jurisdiction as of September 10, 2026,” noted the head of the Federal Road Agency, Roman Novikov.
Thus, this year the comprehensive repair was completed ahead of schedule, and the dirt gap was eliminated on a 13-kilometer section of the federal highway R-504 “Kolyma” in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The repaired section is located in close proximity to the district center in the settlement of Khandyga and connects it with the airport in the settlement of Tyoply Klyuch. The elimination of the dirt gap will reduce travel time and make the journey safer and more comfortable.
Similar work was completed ahead of schedule on another federal highway in Yakutia – the A-331 “Vilyuy.” Here, a dirt rupture was eliminated over a 10-kilometer section from the 859th to the 869th km, passing through the village of Sheya in Suntarsky District. The A-331 “Vilyuy” connects Yakutsk and Mirny, providing reliable communication between settlements in the region. The installation of asphalt concrete pavement in the section, where dirt ruptures previously dominated, will increase driving comfort and safety, as well as ensure more stable transport communication in challenging natural and climatic conditions.
Among the regions where large-scale renovation of the federal road network is ongoing is the Kamchatka Krai. Here, as part of the national project, protective wear layers are being installed on the federal highway A-401 from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the Vitus Bering International Airport in Yelizovo. To date, work has been completed on sections with a total length of 23.5 km. The airport serves as the only means of passenger communication for residents of Kamchatka Krai with other regions of Russia. Therefore, bringing the sections of highway A-401 up to standard is a crucial condition for transport development, safety, and travel comfort.
Meanwhile, in the Penza region, federal road workers have completed the renovation of one of the busiest sections of the M-5 “Ural” highway, which runs within the boundaries of Penza. In 2025, the average daily traffic volume on the segment from the 626th to the 633rd km reached almost 31 thousand vehicles. Considering the high traffic load, specialists aimed to preserve the road’s capacity as much as possible during the repair period. To this end, traffic restrictions were introduced gradually.
In the Krasnodar Territory, under the national project “Infrastructure for Life,” specialists have completed ahead of schedule the repair of three sections of the A-146 Krasnodar – Verkhnebakansky and A-290 Novorossiysk – Kerch highways. The total length of the renovated segments amounted to about 17 km. The federal highway A-290 is a crucial transport corridor connecting the mainland with the Crimean Peninsula, as well as providing passenger and cargo transportation in the southwestern part of Kuban. Meanwhile, the A-146 highway is actively used by freight carriers heading to and from the southern ports.
A significant volume of works to renovate artificial structures is also being carried out in the Novosibirsk region this year. The repaired bridge over the Chulym River on the R-254 “Irtysh” highway was commissioned ahead of schedule.
