Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev, Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut, and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin took part in the ceremonial opening of the Central Moscow Hippodrome.
“We are not just returning the building – we are restoring a tradition, a true point of attraction for the townspeople and guests of the capital. Together with you, we are opening a new chapter in the development of domestic horse breeding. After all, for the industry the hippodrome is an important testing ground. About 4,000 breed horse tests are conducted annually in Russia. Our successes in this area have long been recognized on the international professional stage. The reconstruction has allowed us to create the most modern infrastructure at the Moscow hippodrome. Now it will again become the center of our entire testing system, the flagship of Russian hippodrome business. At the same time, the solutions implemented here should become a benchmark for the modernization of other hippodromes in Russia,” said Dmitry Patrushev.
As part of the reconstruction, modern infrastructure has appeared at the racetrack: two training tracks, three tunnels for the passage of horses, racetrack visitors, and equipment. The renovated stands can accommodate up to 2,000 spectators; automatic timing systems, photo finish, and video broadcast systems have been installed on the territory, along with powerful lighting for evening races. In addition, there is now an equine therapy arena, a veterinary unit, and laboratories. The construction of a thousand new stalls has been completed, and the restoration of the main building—a regional architectural monument—has been carried out.
“I congratulate equestrian sports enthusiasts on the revival of the Moscow Hippodrome. Today, a legend with a history spanning nearly two centuries has returned to Begovaya Street. And Muscovites have gained another excellent public space that will be open to everyone,” noted Sergey Sobyanin.
The Central Moscow Hippodrome was opened in 1834. It is the oldest in Europe and the world’s first hippodrome for harness racing. Today, it is a key facility for the development of domestic horse breeding. Comprehensive reconstruction began in 2024. The project was developed by the Moscow government in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia.
