An organizational meeting of the participants of the elective course “Project Activities” was held at the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The new season brought together 257 students who will work on real tasks from industrial partners in interdisciplinary teams.

The Vice-Rector for Continuing Education addressed the participants with a welcoming speech Victoria Vinogradova. She noted that project-based learning has been conducted at the university for the second year, and during this time interest in it has significantly increased.

“Last year, we implemented 19 projects. This year, we have already received more than 50 project applications. This indicates that such a format of interaction is indeed in demand by both students and industrial partners,” emphasized Victoria Vinogradova.

The main objective of the elective course is to bring education closer to real professional practice. Students work not individually, but in teams that unite representatives from various fields of study: architects, structural engineers, specialists in engineering systems, economists, and other future professionals in the construction industry.

According to the vice-rector, the ability to interact effectively in an interdisciplinary environment becomes one of the most important skills for a young specialist after graduation. Within the framework of the project workshop, participants have the opportunity to work with a real client, take into account their requirements, and jointly seek unconventional engineering and architectural solutions.

During the meeting, the staff of the Educational Center for Project-Based Learning gave a detailed explanation of the elective course structure. The director of the center Inna Sukhanova and deputy director Natalia Zaitseva presented the educational process, the team support system, and the opportunities available to participants.

The elective course is primarily designed for fourth-year bachelor’s students, fifth-year specialist students, and first-year master’s students, but other students may also join. Certificates are provided for those who successfully complete the project, as well as additional points for admission to the master’s program.

The fall semester includes video lectures, practical classes, regular meetings with tutors, and direct work on the project. Each team is accompanied by a university instructor and a representative of the client company, and industry experts are involved as needed.

The organizers paid special attention to the results of the first season. Many projects were continued after the semester ended: students presented them at conferences and professional competitions, and some teams proceeded to a comprehensive defense of their graduation qualification works. Some participants also received offers for internships, traineeships, and employment from partner companies.

In the new academic year, the project showcase features 49 projects from 25 clients, one of which is SPbGASU. Among the clients are construction and design companies, developers, and specialized organizations ready to collaborate with students to develop real engineering and architectural solutions. All projects will be launched in the project and task management system “Kaiten,” which should significantly improve the team’s work efficiency.

Anastasia Dokukina

Lead specialist for work with students and youth at “Glavstroy Saint Petersburg” Anastasia Dokukina wished the participants successful work and noted that joint projects become a platform for mutual exchange of knowledge between the university and the professional community.

After the presentation, the students met their supervisors and met for the first time with the teams with which they will work on projects during the fall semester.
