“Moscow Electronic School“MESh” issued almost 500 thousand “Moskvenok” cards for first-graders and parents of younger preschoolers. They are designed in the style of four Russian fairy tales: “The Turnip,” “The Little Humpbacked Horse,” “The Frog Princess,” and “Ruslan and Lyudmila.” The card functions as a school pass for students and also helps parents monitor their children’s attendance and meals. “The design of ‘Moscvenok’ is updated annually. Last academic year, the card design was dedicated to masterpieces of world painting, and this year, the 11th series of ‘Moscvenok’ tells about Russian fairy tales. The cards feature heroes and plots familiar from childhood,” noted the department’s press service.
In the new series, the main symbol of the card — the little owl Moskvenok — is depicted in all four design variants. In the first version, he rides the humpbacked little horse from the fairy tale of the same name by Petr Ershov; in the second, he appears as Ivan Tsarevich from the Russian folk tale “The Frog Princess”; in the third, together with the cat MESHik, he grows a large turnip; and in the last version, the characters read a book under the oak of Lukomorye from Alexander Pushkin’s poem “Ruslan and Lyudmila.”
Last year, the design of “Moskvnyok” was inspired by the paintings “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh, “Above the Town” by Marc Chagall, “The Athletes” by Kazimir Malevich, and “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Katsushika Hokusai. In 2024, the cards were dedicated to “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli, “Tea Seller” by Boris Kustodiev, “Black Square” by Kazimir Malevich, and “Bathing of the Red Horse” by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. In 2023, “MESH” used the themes of the paintings “Girl with Peaches” by Valentin Serov, “The Son of Man” by Rene Magritte, and “The Scream” by Edvard Munch for the design.
Previously, the cards featured the MESh logos, as well as images of an owl. It became the symbol of the project in 2015. A year later, schoolchildren voted to name it Moskvenok. Since 2021, the owl has had an assistant — the MEShik cat, who also appears on the card images.
The “Moskvyonok” service is connected to kindergartens, schools, and colleges. The system identifier can be linked to an electronic card, as well as to bracelets, keychains, pop sockets, and phone stickers. With these, children can enter the school building, cashlessly pay for purchases in the school cafeteria and buffet, and visit more than 90 museums and exhibition halls in the capital for free. Additionally, the card can be used as a unified library card in the city’s libraries. Parents use the service to monitor school attendance, cafeteria meals, and buffet expenses, place advance orders for hot lunches, and remotely top up the account balance. “Moskvyonok” is used by 2.8 million residents of the capital.
The “Moscow Electronic School” is a joint project of the capital’s Department of Education and Science and Department of Information Technology. The project started in 2016. Today, more than 1.2 million schoolchildren, over 1.8 million parents, and about 70 thousand teachers use the unified digital educational platform. Among the main services of “MESH” are the library of educational materials, electronic diary and grade book, “Moskvenok,” “Student Portfolio,” and “Olympiads”.
