Modern economic, demographic, and geopolitical realities are fundamentally different from those of 1945. The world is rapidly moving towards multipolarity, which is capable of balancing global systems and institutions.
This was stated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the 18th BRICS Summit, emphasizing that the composition of this organization reflects these global changes. He called for reforming multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council and the Bretton Woods system.
“As aptly stated in the theme of your summit, we need to build resilience, foster innovation, develop cooperation, and ensure sustainable development. This is key to shaping inclusive global growth,” said the UN chief.
According to him, the first crucial direction for achieving this goal is development financing. Multilateral development banks need to work more effectively by implementing a new business model to attract private investments and expand concessional financing.
“We must strive to create a development-oriented debt resolution architecture and effective mechanisms to ease the debt burden,” Guterres said.
The second key direction is technology and artificial intelligence, which can significantly accelerate the pace of socio-economic development. However, AI capabilities are currently concentrated in the hands of a few companies located in several countries.
“If left unchecked, the AI divide will exacerbate any other divide – in income, opportunities, security, and sovereignty,” emphasized Guterres.

BRICS countries are rich in talents and ideas, but many still lack computing power, data, and skills, he noted. The Secretary-General called for full support of the Global AI Capacity Building Network and the Global AI Fund.
The third direction is efforts to achieve climate justice, Guterres believes. Scientists confirm the inevitability of a temporary exceedance of the 1.5-degree global warming threshold, and this period must be made as short as possible, the Secretary-General emphasized.
He called for accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, reducing methane emissions, and protecting nature. Upholding the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, each country must do more to protect people from climate threats.
The UN chief also stated the need to achieve peace across the planet – from the Middle East to Ukraine and Sudan. The world needs an end to conflicts and strict adherence to international law, emphasized Guterres.
The Secretary-General emphasized that as the world inevitably moves toward multipolarity, all countries must work together to strengthen and protect the multilateral system that operates in the interests of all humanity.
