School volunteer squads in Moscow actively support the participants of the special military operation (SMO). In the current academic year, Moscow’s educational volunteer organizations continue to contribute to the common cause. The project unites city residents and volunteers “Moscow Helps”.

The volunteer squad of school No. 1354 “Vector” includes over 300 students, teachers, and parents. Together they collect necessary items, create camouflage nets, and write heartfelt letters to servicemen. Over the past two years, the squad has conducted more than 50 volunteer events, in which nearly 400 people have participated. They regularly collect and deliver food products, personal hygiene items, thousands of envelopes with cards, camouflage nets, and trench candles.
“It all started with letters of support and small humanitarian fundraisers. We saw how important it was not only to bring necessary items but also to show the fighters that they are remembered and awaited at home. Since then, we have delivered over 400 nets to the guys; for heating and lighting in February and March, volunteers packed and sent 265 candles, and in December last year — 650 pieces,” said Svetlana Berezina, English and Chinese language teacher, head of the volunteer team ‘Vector of Good.’
The school delivers all goods directly, through trusted partners and to the collection centers of humanitarian aid “Moscow Helps.” For Svetlana Berezina, volunteering is first and foremost an opportunity to nurture caring people. She is convinced that an educational institution should not only provide knowledge but also teach responsibility, respect for others, and help those in need. She advises newcomers to do a small good deed: write a letter and take part in gathering essential items. She believes that volunteering starts with the desire to be helpful, as even the smallest act can become a great support for someone.
Giving kindness is simple
Volunteers from School No. 1357 “On Bratislavskaya” have also been actively supporting participants of the special military operation since 2022. At first, the kids wrote letters with warm and kind words, signed congratulatory cards, and later began making commemorative souvenirs. Together with preschoolers, students, parents, and teachers, they collect essential goods, compose heartfelt messages on sheets of paper where they draw bright scenes in the margins, and also hand over small handmade items created in class. Three times a year, they send large vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid timed to holidays: in February — for Defender of the Fatherland Day, in May — for Victory Day, and in December — for Heroes of the Fatherland Day.
Seven preschool and seven school units participate in the assembly, packaging, and loading. Volunteers hand over food, personal hygiene products, medicines, warm clothing, and underwear. Carefully packed packages include pocket icons, prayer books, knitted socks, and homemade jam. Teachers purchase thermal underwear, chainsaws, angle grinders, screwdrivers, tool kits, thermal imagers, trench candles, and much more. Olga Kvasova, a teacher and volunteer coordinator at school No. 1357 “Na Bratislavskaya,” shared this information.
Even before 2022, the volunteer squad helped nursing homes, animal shelters, and participated in eco-projects; now it also cooperates with charitable foundations. In 2019, the campaign “Kind Angel into Kind Hands” appeared. Every January, during the period between Christmas and Epiphany, creative workshops are held to make handmade angels. At first, they were given to complete strangers, brought to orphanages and social shelters, and four years ago it was decided to give them to servicemen and residents of new regions. Olga Kvasova believes that any help is important, whether it’s a huge box of groceries or a heartfelt letter. Teachers are proud that the number of volunteers in the school grows every year. Young helpers do not wait for adults to tell them what to do—they themselves become initiators of many events.
