At the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, external power supply has been restored, which allowed avoiding the most dangerous scenario of a complete power outage at the facility. This was reported on Friday by Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The station operated on reserve diesel generators for almost three weeks after the power line was damaged as a result of hostilities. An agreement on a temporary local ceasefire was reached with the mediation of the IAEA to carry out repair work.
“Both parties constructively cooperated with the IAEA, which made a local ceasefire possible and demonstrated that even under extremely difficult conditions practical steps can be taken to enhance nuclear safety,” Grossi said at the agency’s Board of Governors meeting earlier this week.
Stabilization amidst overall instability
Nevertheless, according to the head of the IAEA, the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP remains unstable. In recent months, the plant has repeatedly lost external power supply, and diesel fuel reserves have significantly decreased. Replenishing the reserves is complicated due to ongoing hostilities in the area of the plant.
The IAEA emphasizes that reliable power supply is critically important for the safe operation of the facility. Before the conflict, the plant was connected to several power transmission lines, but now it practically depends on a single external energy source.
International inspectors continue to record military activity in the area of the station and the city of Enerhodar. This week, reports were made of shelling resulting in casualties and injuries. IAEA observers heard explosions, drone activity, and gunfire near the facility.
Similar threats have also been noted near other Ukrainian nuclear facilities. In the past few days, the appearance of drones has been recorded near several nuclear power plants, and air raid sirens have sounded.
IAEA Assistance to Ukraine
The IAEA continues to provide Ukraine with assistance in the field of nuclear safety. Since the implementation of the agency’s program, the country has received over 250 shipments of equipment and materials with a total value exceeding 27 million euros. At the same time, according to IAEA calculations, about 17 million euros more are needed to cover priority needs. According to Grossi, international support remains extremely important to prevent a nuclear accident amid the ongoing conflict.
