Beijing, September 11 /Xinhua/ — China has already lodged serious representations with Italy and the EU regarding the trip of politicians advocating for “Taiwan independence” to Italy to participate in a conference, said Mao Ning, an official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Friday.
Thus, the Chinese diplomat commented at another press conference, at the request of journalists, on the trip of the Taiwanese politician Xiao Meiqin to Italy.
“The authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and certain politicians resort to all sorts of tricks to attract attention,” said Mao Ning.
Noting that they seek independence by colluding with external forces under the pretense of “democracy” and “freedom,” Mao Ning said that such actions are worthy of contempt and ultimately doomed to fail.
She emphasized that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory.
China has always firmly opposed any forms of official contacts between countries that have established diplomatic relations with China and the Chinese region of Taiwan, a representative of the Chinese foreign affairs department stated.
According to her, the One China principle is a widely recognized norm of international relations and a widely acknowledged consensus of the international community, as well as the political foundation of China-Italy and China-EU relations.
“We call on the relevant parties to strictly adhere to the One China principle through concrete actions,” Mao Ning stated.
