September 10 marks the one-year anniversary since the opening of the first tram line section without an overhead contact wire in Russia, located on Akademika Sakharova Avenue. During this time, passengers have made over 28.7 million trips on the routes passing through here. Modern autonomous trams of Russian manufacture, “L’vyonok-Moscow” and “Vityaz-Moscow”, operate on this section.
“By the instruction of Sergey Sobyanin, we continue to develop the Moscow tram diameters. In the first year of operation of the section along tram routes passing through Akademika Sakharova Avenue, more than 28.7 million trips were made. Such figures indicate the demand for this route. Today, the first and second Moscow tram diameters (T1 and T2) connect districts of Moscow through the city center and provide passengers with more opportunities for convenient travel,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Traffic on Akademika Sakharova Avenue was developed in stages. Thus, on September 10, 2025, route No. 90 “Metro ‘Sokolniki'” — “Paveletsky Railway Station” was launched here, and on November 12 of the same year — the first Moscow tram diameter “Metro ‘Universitet'” — “Metrogorodok”. On April 9, 2026, on the same section, the trains of the second Moscow tram diameter “Metro ‘Chertanovskaya'” — “MCD Novogireevo” began operating. Along with the “Lvenok-Moscow” cars, three-section “Vityaz-Moscow” trams equipped with an autonomous driving system were put into service on the route.
Already in the first weeks after opening, passenger traffic at T1 and T2 doubled. City residents gained convenient direct routes through the center. Modern fully low-floor vehicles run every six minutes, and on the shared section between the Krasnoselskaya and Tulskaya metro stations — every three minutes.
Today, T1 and T2 pass through 20 districts of the capital and connect major residential, educational, and business areas of the city. In addition, passengers can make 41 transfers to the metro, Moscow Central Circle and Moscow Central Diameters, as well as to transfer to four railway stations.
