“My dream is to one day remove this ‘mountain’,” said Akylbekov, a young local resident, to a reporter from a Chinese media outlet, standing by the window of a modern factory building in the north of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, pointing to the waste landfill in the distance.

For a long time, Bishkek suffered from the problem of waste collapse. In December 2025, a technological waste processing plant with electricity generation was officially put into operation in Bishkek, implemented with the investment participation of the Chinese company Hunan Junxin Environmental Protection Co., Ltd., which also managed the construction and operates the plant.

25-year-old Akylbekov works at this plant as a centralized control operator. “My job is to monitor the waste processing and electricity generation processes in real time through a large screen in the central control room and record data changes in the operating system,” he explains. “If an emergency situation is detected, my colleagues and I immediately go to the site to resolve the issue.”

According to Akylbekov, working together with Chinese colleagues is a great honor and pleasure. “Chinese specialists built this completely new plant, helped my hometown solve the environmental pollution problem, gave me the opportunity to get acquainted with advanced environmental concepts and technologies, and I, in turn, help them adapt and integrate into the local environment,” he says. “I deeply value this friendship that was born during our joint work.”

Project General Manager Zhang Jingfan reported that the company has implemented proven electricity generation technologies based on waste incineration in Kyrgyzstan, which reduces the volume of garbage in Bishkek and enables the cyclical use of waste as a resource raw material. In this way, the city’s environmental problems are addressed, and waste is transformed into resources, while clean energy benefits the local population.

“Previously, before the waste-to-energy plant was built, there was an unbearable smell here, and the garbage would spontaneously combust. But now the situation has significantly improved, and everyone’s mood has also gotten better,” shared local resident Alypova.

According to available data, the total design capacity of the waste processing plant in Bishkek is 3,000 tons per day. At the current stage, the plant processes 1,000 tons of waste daily, generating about 146 million kWh of electricity annually, which is supplied to the grid. The annual reduction of carbon emissions can reach 100 thousand tons.

The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, at the ceremony of commissioning the plant, noted that this project will contribute to solving the waste disposal problem and stimulate electricity production, create new jobs, improve the environmental situation in Bishkek, and make a significant contribution to providing the population with electricity.

Akybekov gladly noted that the foundation for the second phase of the plant construction for waste processing and electricity generation in Bishkek has already been laid. Moreover, the company is building two more similar projects in Issyk-Kul region and the city of Osh. “I hope that the ‘garbage mountain’ will forever remain in the past, and may ecological technologies and a green lifestyle lead us into the future,” he said.
