A new name for a street in the southwest of the capital
Residents propose naming a small street in the Yuzhnoye Butovo district in memory of the writer Leonid Andreyev. At the beginning of the 20th century, he rented a summer house in this area. Surrounded by birch groves, the writer found inspiration for his future works, met with friends, and spent time with his wife and children. The family first rented a wooden house with a large open terrace in the estate in Butovo in the summer of 1903, shortly after the birth of their first child. They returned here twice more—in 1907 and 1916.
The road section runs from Bolshaya Butovskaya Street to Sinelnikovskaya and crosses the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Pavlogradskaya Streets. The proposal to name it “Leonid Andreyev Street” was supported by 49 percent of “active citizens,” and in total voting more than 145 thousand people took part.
Names for squares in the west of Moscow
In the Mozhaysky District and Kuntsevo, residents chose names for two improved areas within the city development. One square is located near houses 14 and 16 on Gvardeyskaya Street, which was named in 1961 in honor of military units that showed special courage. The unnamed area around Mikhailovsky Pond in the Kryukovo district will be named “Architect Pokrovsky Square.” The idea to link the new city toponym with the name of the person who shaped the appearance of Zelenograd was supported by 77 percent of the “active citizens.” In voting collected over 146 thousand opinions from the capital’s residents.
Igor Pokrovsky worked for about 40 years as the chief architect of Zelenograd and coordinated the design of almost all its buildings. Thanks to his work, such well-known structures appeared as the complex of buildings of the Mikron factory, the flute-shaped residential building, the architectural ensembles of the Central Square and the prefecture, the high-rise hotel (currently the Zelenograd business center), the Palace of Culture, the “Shtyki” memorial complex, and the Palace of Creativity for Children and Youth.
