Eight graduates of the Institute of Energy and the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics, and Trade of SPbPU took six first and two second places in the PJSC TGC-1 competition for the best diploma project among universities in the Northwest.
A total of 25 bachelor’s final qualifying works and 16 master’s theses were submitted for the competition across seven categories.
The topics of the Polytech students’ works covered key areas of modern energy: improving the efficiency of thermal power plants, reliability of electrical grids, digitalization of energy facilities, demand management, energy economics, environmental technologies, and renewable energy.
In the category “Thermal power plants and thermal networks,” the polytechnic students took the top two places — with graduate Darya Ulitina from the “Heat Power Engineering and Heat Engineering” program presenting the master’s thesis “Assessment of the Efficiency of Using a Mixing-Type Heater in the Low-Pressure Regeneration System of the T-295/335-23.5 Turbo Unit” (scientific advisor — senior lecturer of the Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Power Engineering Dmitry Treshchyov), and graduate of the same program Alexander Markov with the work “Improvement of the Methodology for Forming the Energy Baseline at a CHP Plant with a CCGT” (scientific advisor — associate professor of the Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Power Engineering Olga Novikova).
In the category “Electrical Systems and Networks,” the first place was awarded to Maksim Ermolaev, a graduate in the field of “Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering.” His master’s thesis is dedicated to the study of single-phase earth faults in an electrical network with a six-phase generator. The scientific supervisor is Associate Professor Andrey Brilinskiy from the Higher School of Electrical Energy Systems.
In the category “Automation and Information Technologies in Energy,” the winner was Vladislav Shakurov, a graduate of the “Thermal Power Engineering and Heat Engineering” program. In his master’s thesis, he developed a recommendation system using digital modeling methods to improve the efficiency of the Pervomayskaya CHP-14. The scientific advisor was Associate Professor Irina Anikina from the Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Power Engineering.

This shows that our graduates are capable not only of applying the knowledge gained but also of finding practical solutions to current industry challenges. I am confident that such experience becomes an important part of the professional development of young specialists and helps them confidently enter the energy sector.“.
The second place in the category “Automation and Information Technologies in Energy” was awarded to Svetlana Abeleva, a graduate of the “Energy Economics” program at IPM&ET. Her work is dedicated to improving economic efficiency in procurement activities (using PJSC “TGK-1” as an example). The academic supervisor is associate professor Olga Novikova from the Higher School of Engineering and Economics.
Representatives of IPME&T took the first two places in the category “Economics and Management in the Energy Enterprise.” Alumna of the “Energy Management” program Valeriya Kraeva presented a master’s thesis entitled “Demand management for electricity as a tool to increase the resilience of the regional energy system under limited generation capacity (using the Kirov region as an example).” The scientific advisor was Professor Yuri Nurulin of the Higher School of Production Management.
Graduate of the “Energy Economics” program Veronika Korolyuk won with a work dedicated to the analysis of economic efficiency and optimization of implementation parameters of an investment project for a digital substation (based on the example of PJSC “Rosseti North-West”). Scientific supervisor — Associate Professor of the Higher Engineering and Economic School Tatiana Mokeeva.
In the category “Sales activities in the wholesale electricity and capacity market and the heat energy market,” the second place was taken by graduate of the “Production Management” program Elizaveta Sasin. In her work, Elizaveta built a model for forecasting the balance of heat energy (capacity) of the region by consumer groups. The success of our graduates in the competition is a significant contribution to the personnel and scientific-technical potential of St. Petersburg and the Northwestern Federal District. The submitted works address current industry challenges: from managing demand in the regions to optimizing investments. By providing high-quality training for such specialists, we strengthen the economic independence of the region, since the modernization of the energy sector and the stability of territories depend on the competencies of young professionals, emphasized Vladimir Shchepinin, Director of the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade at SPbPU.
For thorough project development, the work of Anastasia Malykh, a graduate of the “Construction” program dedicated to the study of a floating geothermal station, was recognized. The scientific supervisor is Professor Alexander Bolshev of the Higher School of Hydraulic Engineering and Energy Construction.
The high results of the Polytechnic students in the PJSC “TGK-1” competition confirm the practical focus of the students’ training and the demand for the graduates’ competencies. Diploma projects become not only the conclusion of the education but also a real foundation for solving specific tasks of energy enterprises, commented Lyudmila Pankova, the Vice-Rector for Educational Activities of SPbPU, on the competition results.
