“For the City Day celebration, the portal ‘Discover Moscow’ published a special project ‘Discover the Secrets of Moscow Parks,’ which will allow everyone to feel like an explorer. The online game invites city residents to look at the familiar green zones of the capital as mysterious spaces that hold amazing historical facts. Users will need to go through 15 game stages dedicated to 13 parks, estates, and museum reserves — from ‘Kolomenskoye’ and ‘Tsaritsyno’ to the Kuskovo estate and Neskuchny Garden. The main intrigue of the project is the search for hidden objects in photographs. By finding them all, the user will be able to compose a secret phrase and get a chance to win memorable souvenirs, which makes studying the history of the parks not just informative but also an exciting adventure,” the team explained.
The project “Discover the Secrets of Moscow’s Parks” has been implemented by the city’s departments information technologies, cultures and cultural heritage. It allows you to see city parks not just as alleys and lawns, but as living spaces full of unsolved mysteries and amazing stories.
“Moscow is one of the greenest cities in the world. A park like Kuzminki and the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve are not just places for recreation; they are unique historical territories that preserve the city’s centuries-old memory and hide their secrets: from archaeological finds to architectural elements of past eras. By unveiling the mysteries of Moscow’s parks, we help residents and visitors of the capital see familiar routes in a new light and connect with the authentic, living history of Moscow,” noted the head of the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage.
If you open the special project page on the “Discover Moscow” portal and click the “Go on a journey” button, you can see a photo of one of the 13 parks participating in the project, along with an interesting fact about it. For example, the card for the N.E. Bauman Garden tells about a 50-meter-long pergola (a garden and park structure in the form of a series of arches forming a tunnel). Three arches are tightly wrapped with grapevines. In summer, you can hide from the sun here, and in autumn — admire the glimmers of the yellowing leaves.
The card of the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve reveals that fruits were grown in its gardens for the feasts of Russian tsars. The gardens were established in Kolomenskoye back in the 17th century during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich. Today, the branches of apple trees of the “Antonovka” and “Papirka” varieties literally bend under the weight of the fruit.
In the museum-reserve “Tsaritsyno” card, one can see an interesting structure called the “Devil’s Staircase.” The tower-ruin was built in 1804 at the peak of the fashion for artificial ruins. A stone staircase led to the top — climbing up was easy, but descending was much harder. In 2007, the deteriorated structure was reconstructed.
The lively garden is adorned with grotesque bridges, built by order of Count Orlov at the end of the 18th century for carriage passage. They got their unusual name thanks to their decoration: their brickwork is inlaid with rough stones — “grotesques,” giving the structures a mysterious pseudo-Gothic appearance.
The special project “Discover the Secrets of Moscow’s Parks” features institutions such as the N.E. Bauman Gardens, “Hermitage”, Neskuchny Garden, the Kuskovo and Vorontsovo estates, the Kolomenskoye and Tsaritsyno museum-reserves, the Kuzminki, Krasnaya Presnya, Zaryadye, Druzhba, Izmailovsky Park, and the Mitino Landscape Park. The project will be interesting both for Muscovites and for residents of other regions of Russia who want to learn more about the capital’s parks.
“Discover Moscow” — a joint project of the metropolitan departments information technologies, cultures and cultural heritage, as well as education and science. The portal offers over 335 walking routes across various districts of the city. The interactive guide includes photographs and descriptions of nearly 2,400 buildings, more than 700 monuments, 410 museums, 520 historical sites, and 450 famous personalities whose lives were connected to the city.
“Moscow Parks” is a large-scale urban initiative aimed at creating comfortable, modern, and multifunctional recreational areas for residents and visitors of the capital. It unites more than 50 territories where people can engage in sports, attend cultural events, and spend family leisure time in nature. The project not only preserves unique landscapes and ecosystems but also promotes the emergence of new infrastructure in the parks.
