The Mosgortrans operational site “Presnya” has started servicing modern electric buses: 10 ultra-fast charging stations have been installed there. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.
“We continue to develop infrastructure for environmentally friendly transport, as instructed by Sergey Sobyanin. The ‘Presnya’ site has become the 13th electric bus depot in the capital. Now half of Mosgortrans’s operational sites service electric buses,” added Maxim Liksutov.
The site is equipped with 10 ultra-fast charging stations. It can service up to 100 electric buses, and more than 150 professional drivers operate on the routes.
Over 1.2 million trips daily
Since 2018, a network of innovative electric-powered transport has been developing in Moscow. Today, electric buses operate in all districts of the capital. They feature smooth rides, lack of noise and vibrations, which makes trips significantly more comfortable. At the same time, the main advantage of electric buses is their environmental friendliness.
On weekdays, passengers make more than 1.2 million trips daily on electric buses. Since the introduction of electric transport in 2018, the total number of trips on this type of transport has exceeded 1.1 billion.
New deliveries of electric buses and the expansion of charging infrastructure will allow increasing the number of eco-friendly transport routes in Moscow. At the same time, the city’s demand for domestic equipment supports employment in the regions and the development of industry.
How modern electric buses are designed
Moscow electric buses provide a high level of service and meet strict safety requirements. Their low-floor design makes them convenient for passengers with limited mobility: they are equipped with a fold-out ramp and driver call buttons, with the driver ready to assist with boarding and disembarking if necessary. The storage area can accommodate bicycles, baby strollers, or large luggage.
The cabin has USB ports for charging mobile devices and media screens displaying information about upcoming stops and transfers. The climate control system maintains an optimal temperature throughout the year, and an air curtain prevents sudden temperature changes inside the cabin when the doors open.
The door opening buttons allow warm air to be retained at each stop. For passenger safety, the electric buses are equipped with video cameras both inside the cabin and outside. Digital validators are installed near the doors, with which you can pay the fare in any convenient way.
Since 2022, improved model vehicles have been supplied to Moscow. The interiors of these electric buses are equipped with adaptive lighting that changes the shade from cool to warm at 14:00. The route indicator has been increased by 18 percent, allowing the number to be seen from afar. The electric heater maintains an optimal temperature without harming the environment. The driving range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers, while the vehicle’s weight has remained the same.
From the first electric buses to a large-scale network
Today, electric buses operate at 13 Mosgortrans sites. The capital was the first in Russia to begin building modern electric bus depots. In 2022, the first in the country and the largest electric bus depot in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrugs (TiNAO). Eco-friendly vehicles started running routes in TiNAO. A year later, the “Mitino” depot was built in the northwest, and electric buses began serving routes in 20 districts of the capital and two nearby cities in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative depot “Saltykovka” started operating, servicing routes in the east of Moscow.
In 2025, the capital began operating new generation KamAZ-52222 electric buses. The designers took into account the experience of operating previous models and passengers’ wishes: the interior layout was redesigned, the accumulation area was expanded by 15 percent, space for hand luggage was created, and the door construction was modernized. The climate control system became more efficient, and the light indicator above the entrance notifies about door opening and closing. The exterior appearance of the electric buses corresponds to modern trends in global industrial design. The new vehicles have already covered more than 10 million kilometers and have proven their reliability.
According to MosEcoMonitoring data Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection, in Moscow, during the period from 2018 to 2025, the replacement of traditional buses with electric transport allowed preventing emissions of about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants into the atmosphere and 300 thousand tons of CO₂-equivalent greenhouse gases. In 2025 alone, 380 tons of harmful emissions and 110 thousand tons of greenhouse gases were avoided.
