September 3 marks exactly one year since the launch of the world’s first fully autonomous tram with passengers. During this time, the number of such trams in Moscow has grown to four, and the innovative transport has traveled more than 46,000 km including testing. This was reported by Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Transport and Industry.
Over the course of a year, driverless trams have become part of the capital’s passenger transport system. Muscovites and visitors to the city have already made more than 140,000 trips on them. Some of the tram sets continue to operate in test mode.
Over the course of a year, driverless trams completed more than 4,200 passenger trips without a single traffic violation. This result confirms the high level of safety and reliability of the technology developed for the capital’s transportation system.
Meanwhile, Moscow continues to improve the unmanned system. Test tram-laboratories under driver control have begun independently collecting data without passengers. They operate on all 11 routes of the Krasnopresnensk tram network, helping to accumulate the necessary information for further development of the technology.
The development and support of the software for the driverless tram are carried out by specialists from the IT company “MTTECH.” At the same time, the driverless system is entirely owned by the Moscow Government.
“On September 3, 2025, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin launched the movement of the world’s first fully autonomous tram with passengers on board. Regular trips demonstrate the reliability and stability of the capital’s development. The innovative transport independently makes stops, opens and closes doors, strictly follows traffic light signals, yields to pedestrians, switches tracks, and adheres precisely to the schedule. We are preparing to launch autonomous trams on 2 more routes by the end of 2026. According to the Transport Development Strategy, by 2030 about two-thirds of the city’s tram fleet will become autonomous, and by 2035 — 90%,” added Maxim Liksutov.
Thus, the first year of operation became for the Moscow driverless tram not only a testing phase but also the beginning of scaling up the technology. Moscow will continue to expand the use of driverless transport and create conditions for its integration into the city’s transportation system.
