During her closing conference as Chair of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock called international law a “life insurance” and stated the need to abide by it in the face of global challenges.
Baerbock will leave her post in just a few days, when the 81st session of the General Assembly opens on September 8. It will be chaired by diplomat from Bangladesh, Halilur Rahman.
Summing up the 80th session, Baerbock noted that despite all the difficulties encountered during the session and the general disunity in the world, “here, within the walls of this building [the UN headquarters in New York – editor’s note], the member states were more united than divided.”
She specifically emphasized that this session opened “a new, completely special chapter in the activities of the UN in the field of artificial intelligence.”
“For the first time, an Independent International Scientific Group on Artificial Intelligence was created, comprising experts from around the world, and for the first time – based on the principles of gender parity,” said Baerbock.
Speaking about the reform of the UN, Baerbock noted: “We need less bureaucracy, and we must act much more efficiently and effectively in the context of a digitalizing world. That is why the implementation of the measures for the ‘UN-80’ reform has become – after the defense of the UN Charter – the second most important priority of my chairmanship.”
In response to a question about the election of the new UN chief, the President of the General Assembly said: “The choice that the UN will make regarding the tenth Secretary-General will be a signal of whether this Organization truly represents the interests of the people it is meant to serve.”
She called for maintaining “the same level of openness and public attention in the final stages of the process of selecting and appointing the next Secretary-General.”
