Beijing, September 3 /Xinhua/ — Chinese customs authorities have introduced enhanced inspection and quarantine measures for passengers and cargo arriving from countries or regions affected by poliomyelitis.
These measures were announced after the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the risk of international spread of the poliovirus still constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
Starting Thursday, travelers from countries where polio is widespread, who have been in contact with polio patients or have symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, neck stiffness, limb pain, or flaccid paralysis, will be required to report their condition at customs upon entering China, according to a statement from the General Administration of Customs (GAC) of the PRC.
The administration has also ordered sanitary treatment of arriving vehicles, containers, goods, luggage, and parcels that may be contaminated if they have arrived from countries or regions where poliomyelitis has been reported.
These measures will be in effect for one year and will apply to any other countries or regions that WHO may recognize as affected by polio during this period. -0-
