Strikes on Ukraine
Nearly 60 civilians were killed and 240 injured as a result of strikes carried out over the past weekend in several regions of Ukraine. This was reported by the UN press service citing data from local authorities. The most affected were Kyiv and Kyiv region: a drone strike on an ammunition depot caused a powerful explosion, resulting in 38 deaths, including residents of a nursing home. Another 52 people, including children, were injured. Humanitarian organizations are providing assistance to those affected.
The situation in Lebanon
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) continues to record Israeli army activity, including artillery fire and troop deployments. The peacekeepers also discovered unmanned ammunition stockpiles. Meanwhile, acting UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jean Arnault concluded his visit to New York, during which he spoke at closed consultations of the Security Council and held meetings with the parties. Arnault emphasized the scale of the challenges facing Lebanon and pointed to the need to ensure a substantial international presence in the south of the country after the expiration of UNIFIL’s mandate.
UN Head in Kyrgyzstan
UN Chief António Guterres is visiting Kyrgyzstan: he is participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which is taking place in Bishkek on August 31 and September 1. The opening of the meeting coincided with Kyrgyzstan’s Independence Day. In Bishkek, the UN chief held a series of bilateral meetings, including with the presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Guterres also attended the opening ceremony of the VI World Nomad Games. This week, Kyrgyzstan will become a venue where more than a hundred countries will showcase their traditional sports, as well as crafts and music.
Sea level rise
The level of the World Ocean is rising faster than ever, representing “one of the most serious threats to populations worldwide.” This is stated in a UN report presented on Monday by the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau. According to the report, by 2050, up to 1.2 billion people could be forced to leave their homes due to sea level rise. Damage to coastal infrastructure already exceeds $1.8 trillion.
