On August 30, 2013, the first night routes of ground city transport began operating in Moscow. Today, the network covers almost 100 districts in practically all administrative areas and connects them with the city center. The night routes allow reaching Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports, as well as all railway stations of Moscow.

“By the directive of Sergey Sobyanin, 13 years ago we launched the first night routes of ground transport. They operate when the metro is already closed and run along the metro lines. Since the launch, about 15 million trips have been made on night routes. Today, 18 night routes operate in the capital every night, two of which are around-the-clock. We continue to develop night transport and make it more comfortable and environmentally friendly. Very soon, more than half of the night routes will be served by modern Russian electric buses,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Maxim Liksutov.

How night routes work

Most night routes converge at the Kitay-gorod metro station. Here you can transfer for free from one bus to another and continue your journey to the desired part of the city. To do this, you need to register map The “Troika” card in the personal account of the “Moscow Metro” or “Moscow Transport” applications. The exception is the 24-hour route B, which runs along the Garden Ring.

You can top up the “Troika” card remotely through the unified transport portal, the “Moscow Transport” app, the “Moscow Metro” app, or a bank. The payment can be activated on any validator in a bus or electric bus — just hold the card to the reader inside the vehicle.

From “Kitay-gorod,” buses depart daily from 01:00 to 05:45. Routes N1-N11 run at :00 and :30 each hour, while N12-N16 run at :15 and :45.

Night transport is especially relevant in the warm season, when Muscovites stroll through the evening city, meet with friends, visit summer verandas and cultural events. The highest demand falls on the early morning, around 04:00–05:00. At this time, routes help city residents get to work whose workday starts at five or six in the morning. Such transport is also in demand among those who work night shifts.

Passengers make about 3,400 trips every night. More than 130 modern buses and domestically produced electric buses operate on the line, with over 130 professional drivers involved in the work. In addition, some routes are gradually being converted to electric buses. Such transport is quiet, which is especially important late at night: traffic noise can disturb residents living along the streets where the buses run. In mid-August, electric buses began servicing route N2 along Kutuzovsky Prospekt, and on August 29 — route N15. In September, they plan to convert route N14 to this type of transport.

There are more than 900 surface urban transport routes operating in Moscow. More than 760 of them, including a network of night and around-the-clock routes, are serviced by the State Unitary Enterprise “Mosgortrans” — the largest surface transport operator in Russia. The company accounts for over 80 percent of the entire city’s route network.

Russian-made electric buses

The Mosgortrans park has more than 2,440 electric buses produced by PJSC KamAZ and about 570 electric buses by LLC LIAZ. New models are developed taking into account the technical requirements of Moscow, global trends, and the operational experience of previous generations of equipment.

Moscow’s orders for new equipment contribute to the development of domestic industry and help preserve jobs in the regions. Several major enterprises in the country are involved in the production of electric buses.

In Naberezhnye Chelny, there are foundry and forge plants, an engine factory, press-frame and automobile plants, as well as enterprises producing spare parts and components, axles, and other necessary products. The production chain includes PJSC NefAZ and PJSC Tuymazinsky Concrete Mixer Plant in Bashkortostan, as well as PJSC Tutaev Motor Plant in the Yaroslavl region.

LiAZ electric buses for Moscow are produced by specialists from the Likino Bus Plant — one of the leading Russian manufacturers of medium, large, and extra-large class buses. LiAZ was the first factory in Russia to start creating low-floor and gas-powered transport, as well as vehicles meeting the fifth ecological class. In addition, the enterprise has developed several generations of electric buses. Today, the plant operates a full-cycle production: specialists perform welding, painting, assembly, and other operations.

In accordance with the goals of the national project “Infrastructure for Life” In Moscow, great attention is being paid to the modernization of social and communal infrastructure, including increasing the number of convenient urban transport routes and updating the rolling stock. In addition, within the framework of the national project, Moscow has begun developing the Central Transport Hub.
