Modern electric buses have started operating on the night route N15. It passes by 21 rail framework stations and covers 11 districts in two administrative okrugs of the capital: Central and Eastern. This was announced by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.
“We continue to replace buses with environmentally friendly electric buses, as instructed by Sergey Sobyanin. Six Russian-made vehicles operate on the new night electric bus route. They increase the level of comfort during night trips and reduce noise levels, which positively affects the quality of life of Muscovites,” noted Maksim Liksutov.
Since 2018, innovative electric-powered transport has been arriving in the capital. Today, the ground electric transport network covers all districts of Moscow.
Eco-friendly and comfortable
The main advantage of electric buses is that they do not affect the city’s ecology. According to data from MosEcoMonitoring, the capital’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the replacement of buses with modern vehicles in 2018–2025 allowed preventing the emission into the air of about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants and approximately 300 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in greenhouse gases. Only in 2025, it was possible to avoid the emission of about 380 tons of pollutants and almost 110 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Thanks to a smooth ride, absence of noise and vibrations, trips on modern transport are becoming more comfortable. On weekdays, passengers make on average more than 1.2 million trips on electric buses, and since 2018 their total number has exceeded 1.1 billion.
Modern vehicles provide a high level of service and comply with the strictest safety standards. USB ports are installed inside the cabin for charging gadgets. Media screens display up-to-date information about nearby stops and possible transfers. The climate control system maintains an optimal temperature throughout the year. A special air curtain, which activates when the doors open, helps to preserve it.
For passenger safety, the vehicle is equipped with cameras outside and inside. Digital validators are located near the doors, allowing you to pay the fare in any convenient way. Additionally, there are buttons inside the cabin for targeted door opening.
Low-floor electric buses are fully adapted for the comfort of passengers with limited mobility. They have access to a folding ramp and driver call buttons, and the driver can assist with boarding or leaving the vehicle if necessary. The rear platform can accommodate bicycles, strollers, or large luggage.
Modern technology
Since 2022, upgraded equipment has been supplied to the capital. Such electric buses feature adaptive cabin lighting that changes from a cool tone to a warm one at 2:00 PM for passenger comfort. The front route indicator, increased by 18 percent, allows the number to be seen from afar. The electric heater maintains an optimal temperature inside the cabin and does not affect the environment. The travel range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers. At the same time, the vehicle’s weight has remained unchanged.
Today, electric buses operate at 12 Mosgortrans sites. The capital was the first in Russia to begin constructing modern electric bus fleets. In 2022, the first electric bus depot in Russia and the largest in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrugs (TiNAO). Eco-friendly vehicles started running on routes in TiNAO.
A year later, the Mitino park was built in the northwest. With its opening, electric buses began running on routes in 20 districts of the capital and two nearby cities in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative electric bus park — Saltykovka — started operating. It serves routes in the eastern part of the capital.
In 2025, new generation KamAZ-52222 electric buses entered service. They are even more comfortable thanks to a redesigned interior layout, a 15 percent larger standing area, places for hand luggage, and modified door construction. The climate system in these vehicles is more efficient, and the doors feature light strips indicating opening and closing. The exterior design of the electric buses has become more aligned with modern trends in global industrial design.
Electric buses are created taking into account the operational experience of earlier models and passenger feedback. Since the launch of the new generation vehicles, they have traveled over 10 million kilometers on routes. Today, they are serviced at 10 Mosgortrans facilities.
Development of transport in the capital
The capital continues to develop urban transport. Comfortable and safe electric buses deliver passengers to rail framework stations, as well as to important social, cultural, and sports facilities.
New deliveries of equipment and the development of charging infrastructure in the city will allow the creation of even more electric bus routes. Moscow’s order for the production of new equipment supports employment in the regions and stimulates the development of domestic industry.
