Escalation in southern Lebanon
The resumed fighting in southern Lebanon threatens the safety of civilians and leads to the destruction of residential houses and infrastructure, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns. Following reports of Hezbollah drone attacks and Israel’s retaliatory strikes on Wednesday and Thursday, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon calls for restraint and the resumption of negotiations to avoid further escalation. Peacekeepers continue to record violations of airspace, as well as extensive ground activity by the Israel Defense Forces.
Ebola Outbreak
The current Ebola outbreak has become the largest in the history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the fastest-growing epidemic of this disease ever recorded. However, international attention and the resources provided to the country so far do not match the scale of the crisis, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Thursday. The humanitarian plan is funded only at 48 percent, largely thanks to a major contribution from the United States. However, the existing resources will only last for a few weeks, the Secretary-General warned.
Flooding in Asia
At least 17,000 children are in urgent need of assistance following massive floods that struck several districts of Nepal on August 26. This was reported on Thursday by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher allocated the first 2 million dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund to support those affected. Preliminary data indicate that the natural disaster on the Nepal-China border has claimed more than 350 lives, including at least 14 children. Hundreds are reported missing.
The death of Ratko Mladić
Secretary-General António Guterres has taken note of the report of the death of Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb forces, the UN press service said today. Mladić was serving a life sentence after the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia found him guilty in 2017 of genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws and customs of war. The Secretary-General expressed solidarity with the victims and condemned any actions aimed at denying the fact of the genocide in Srebrenica and at glorifying those convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
