Today, the A-291 “Tavrida” highway celebrates its sixth anniversary. The key federal highway for the Crimean Peninsula was inaugurated on August 27, 2020, by President Vladimir Putin. Since then, 33.7 million vehicles have traveled on the motorway, and its development continues today, announced Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“The Russian construction complex continues to fulfill the tasks set for the development of the road network in Crimea, where the ‘Tavrida’ highway has become an important component of the peninsula’s transport system. Today, despite challenging conditions, projects for the construction of access roads from ‘Tavrida’ to the southern coast of Crimea – Alushta, Yalta, and Sudak – are ongoing. This will improve the transport accessibility of resort cities, making trips more comfortable and safer for Crimeans and tourists. The four-lane highway, over 260 km long, which was opened by the President in 2020, connects Kerch and Sevastopol, passing through Feodosia, Belogorsk, Simferopol, and Bakhchisaray. Thanks to this, traffic safety has improved, travel time has been reduced from a whole day to two and a half hours, and cities have been relieved of transit traffic. Over six years, 33.7 million vehicles have traveled along the highway,” said Marat Khusnullin.
By order of the President to improve accessibility to the southern coast of Crimea, the 7.2 km approach from “Tavrida” to Feodosia has been repaired. The section has been expanded from two to four lanes, equipped with a central barrier and external lighting. Traffic here was opened on May 31, 2024. In addition, the construction of the Simferopol bypass has been completed.
Work is also ongoing on the design and construction of other access routes to the cities of the Southern Coast of Crimea. For example, road sections are being built in the direction of Alushta, Yalta, and Sudak, as well as the reconstruction of the mountainous Bakhchisaray – Yalta road. Construction work is being carried out in accordance with approved schedules.
According to the updated six-year road activity plan for 2026–2031 approved by the Government, the systematic installation of fixed electric lighting along the entire federal highway is currently underway. Upon completion of all stages, the total length of illuminated sections will increase by 260 km, making travel along “Tavrida” even more reliable and convenient for all categories of motorists.
“This federal highway is the most important infrastructure facility for Crimea. It ensures connectivity of territories and major settlements within the peninsula, and its construction has reduced travel time from Kerch to Sevastopol. ‘Tavrida’ is in high demand among local residents, tourists, and freight carriers. And we continue work on its modernization to make travel even safer and more comfortable for all road users,” emphasized Nikita Khrapov, head of FCU ‘Uprdor Tamani’.
The construction of “Tavrida” began in May 2017 and was carried out as part of the federal target program for the socio-economic development of Crimea and Sevastopol. Both regions were the customers. More than 5,000 road workers from various parts of Russia were involved in the construction, working in shifts around the clock. During the project, existing sections were reconstructed and new ones were built – in particular, bypass routes around Feodosia, Belogorsk, Simferopol, Bakhchisarai, and Sevastopol.
