Lhasa, August 29 /Xinhua/ — Seven people have died, 554 are reported missing, and two local residents have been rescued as of 1:00 AM on Saturday following a landslide that struck the Gyirong checkpoint on the China-Nepal border in the Tibet Autonomous Region /Southwest China/. This was reported by the Emergency Management Department of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Currently, a total of 2,141 rescuers and 86 specialists in natural resources and other related fields are working in the disaster area. Using specialized equipment, they are intensively inspecting adjacent mountain ranges, roads, and other critical zones sequentially to identify potential geological hazard risks.
In addition, a monitoring post consisting of five people has been established for the continuous monitoring of the dammed lake formed as a result of the mudflow and to prevent possible secondary disasters.
The damaged section of the road, 1.02 km long, was also cleared and reopened to traffic.
